Story Behind The Song
This song was first written in 3/4, and in its evolvution back into 4/4, some of the lyrical phrasings became more interesting. My dominant image as I wrote Devil On Me was of the crash of United Flight 232 in 1989. Roughly half of the passengers survived

Lyrics
I had a dream I was caught in a tailspin
Crystal blue ocean, alive in my hands
And I saved 'em all but the first one
When I awoke, there's a little girl cryin
Pale yellow ribbon awash in her hair
She said "What did you do to the first one?
How can I love, love, when I got no one
Then she put the Devil on Me
She put the Devil on Me
She put the Devil on Me
Honey, I did the best I could
She put the Devil on Me
She put the Devil on Me
She put the Devil on Me
And I'd do it all the same if I could do it again
Dear Captain, told you I got no one
Whatcha gonna do to make me forgive
You didn't save 'em all, you lost one
And if I seem sick, keep your eyes on me
Watch the way they roll on down
Never gonna let you see the next time
How can I love, love, when you lost mine
I had a dream I was caught in a tailspin
Crystal blue ocean, alive in my hands
Nothin I could do but turn and hold on
Nothin I could do but turn and hold on
