Red Alert

Story Behind The Song

I liked the use of fire imagery throughout a song about smoldering looks of passion, smoke getting in someone's eyes so that they were too blind to notice the looks, and then when they do go off with the woman giving them the fiery looks, they leave their ex dousing the flames of their burned-out passion, and standing amid the cold embers, feeling a fool for only just realising that it wasn't smoke that had made her lover blind, but love--for the woman who's now won him over.

Song Description

The song is based around fire imagery--a woman has been directing smoldering looks at the singer's lover, but when challenged on this, the lover says she's just imagining it--until finally he goes off with the woman giving him the lustful looks, leaving the singer crying amid the embers of their burned-out love and feeling a fool for having been persuaded that she was just imagining that something was happening between her lover and the woman who's now won him over.

Lyrics

Red Alert

There's a glow of pure desire
Each time she sees you, so plain it hurts,
And there's a spark could turn to fire,
That's why my heart's on red alert:

Don't tell me you don't want to know,
Don't say you haven't seen that glow,
And if you swear it doesn't show and say it's in my mind,
Must be the smoke that's made you blind.

And there's a look of clear intention
Each time I've seen her catch your eye;
So she has my complete attention,
Afraid what she'll do by and by.

Don't tell me you don't want to know,
Don't say you haven't seen that glow;
If you swear it doesn't show and say it's in my mind,
Must be the smoke that's made you blind.

Five senses here on red alert
While six tells me I'll end up hurt,
It only takes a breeze to fan that flame,
And I'll be on a losing game.

And in the morning who remembers
Me with my hopes burned to the ground?
These tears that fall upon the embers,
They couldn't put that fire out.

You said you didn't want to know,
You said you hadn't seen that glow,
Swore to me it didn't show, said it was in my mind,
Must be love that made you blind.

You said you didn't want to know,
You said you hadn't seen that glow,
Swore to me it didn't show, said it was in my mind,
Must be love that made you blind,
Must be love that made you blind,
Must be love that made you blind.
