Story Behind The Song
The inspiration for the song came from the observation that often with a new love, one party puts the other up on an unrealistic pedestal that they cannot possibly live up to, with the inevitable result that they come crashing down from it and the love affair fails.
Song Description
The singer was adored by someone initially, who put her up on a pedestal, expecting her to be perfect in every way. When she gradually showed her human failings--that she'd come through various struggles, and wasn't a 'female superman' after all, this led to disilluisnment on the part of the person who had the crush on her, and she inevitably fell off her pedestal as a result--and their love faded away.

Lyrics
Pedestal
You put me on a pedestal and I could only fall
Once you saw that I was only human after all;
Said that you adored me, would love me all your days,
But when I showed my weaker side, you ran away.
I opened up and told you of the struggles I'd come through,
Then I said I'd never felt the way I felt for you;
But you twisted it around, said my need was much too strong,
And now I'm on my own feeling like I did something wrong.
Pedestals they crumble
And what stands upon them falls,
And then we're left with nothing
When we thought we had it all.
All I wanted was for you to love me as I am,
Knew that I could never be some female superman;
So disappointment ended what began so hopefully,
Cos I could never be the one you wanted me to be.
Pedestals they crumble
And what stands upon them falls,
And then we're left with nothing
When we thought we had it all.
I'll move on and you'll move on,
In time the pain will ease,
And neither will have learned much,
And the pattern will repeat:
You put me on a pedestal and I could only fall
Once you saw that I was only human after all;
Said that you adored me, would love me all your days,
But all of that meant nothing, and soon love faded away,
No, all of that meant nothing, and soon love faded away.
