Call Waiting

Story Behind The Song

In my other work as a proofreader I came across a sub-head in a book about why many relaitonships fail, entitled 'Call Waiting', and it just struck me that that would make a good title and theme for a song about someone unable to get through to their lover because they are engrossed in a long conversation with a new love and won't break off even though they know their current partner is trying to get through to them, because they can hear the 'call waiting' tone.

Song Description

The singer is trying to call her lover on the phone one evening but keeps getting the 'call waiting' tone. She becomes more snd more supspicious that they are engrossed in a long conversation with a new lover, and once it gets past mdnight and she still can't get through, she faces the truth, gives up and leaves town and the relationship behind her.

Lyrics

Call Waiting

Call waiting on your telephone line,
Who are you talking to through the night?
Mind racing, working overtime
Is this how it feels to be two-timed?

Heart breaking cos I can't get through,
Frustration tearing me in two;
Here I am in a losers' queue--
Who are you talking to like we used to do?

Blind devotion had me in denial,
You've been pulling away from me for a long, long while,
Telling me the truth has never been your style;
But there's one thing you can't hide, 'cos that busy tone don't lie.

Instrumental break

Blind devotion had me in denial,
You've been pulling away from me for a long, long while,
Telling me the truth has never been your style;
But there's one thing you can't hide, 'cos that busy tone don't lie.

Call waiting, you ignore the tone,
The conversation goes on and on,
Don't think I've ever felt more alone;
When midnight hits, I know I must move on.

Taxi's waiting outside my door,
Gonna try you just once more,
Your line's still busy, now I know for sure--
I won't be here when you've finished up this call.

Call waiting on your telephone line,
I've guessed who's been keeping you up all night,
Mind racing, working overtime,
This is how it feels to be two-timed,
This is how it feels to be two-timed,
This is how it feels to be two-timed.
