Story Behind The Song

My aunt had just died of cancer after a very short 1 year battle. My boss made me feel inadequate in every way. I had failed a professional exam. And then I broke up with a guy I was seeing for 6 months. I don't think I was in love with him, but I do remember not wanting to be bothered with dating anymore. After realising the hard exterior of the strong black woman wasn't real for anyone, I had to learn to be gentle with myself and to seek someone else who would be gentle as well.

This poem came with one of many breakups....and there were many! It had become clear that my heart was tender and fragile and only meant to be handled by a partner who would treat her as she desired and deserved. ? On the album, this poem is set to a slow hip hop back beat.
