Story Behind The Song
I had always known myself as a strong, independent Caribbean woman of African descent. I had to learn to measure this strength, not against my accomplishments, but against the depth of relationship that I cultivate with myself and my daughter. This piece is for the Moms who are battling the overwhelm and uncertainty of defining motherhood, womanhood, femininity and the external roles and expectations of others.
Song Description
This is such a strong piece and a clarion call for all the independent ladies out there, the single moms, the feminists and those who love them. This spoke to early days as a Mom when I still felt like I could do it all and before I learned how to ask for help.
Again, a hip hop back beat to bring some powerful undertones to this rhythm poetry delivery.

Lyrics
No Man is an Island
But I am woman
Bearer of flowing mammary gland
Young, strong, Yes I Can!
Trying to prove I can do it all
Cook, clean, be pretty, love
Still pride goes before a long fall
Though motherhood fits like a glove
I fumble through the day
Happily tethered to baby's needs
Her innocence deserves her way
On demand she sleeps and feeds
Yet the demands of another
Add pressure to my mind
Without intentionally being a bother
I solely focus on the grind
Overwhelmed, myself, I find
Myself, I neglect, duties to fulfill
Help comes in cash and kind
Immaturity a fun time did kill
But today, growth I celebrate
Shed a tear and lift spirits high
My schedule can't bear another weight
After all this new army is only I
So I call on the one God I know
For grace and strength to abound
And mercy in time of need to flow
Feet firmly planted on the ground
Continuing to be a great mom
To raise a lady and learn same time
Looking forward to challenges to come
Myself, I find, happier songs and rhymes.
