Story Behind The Song
I have always loved trains and story songs. I just found myself thinking about how life is a journey and a train seemed like a good vehicle to communicate that.
Song Description
The protaganist is placed on a train at a young age and leaves his father to be with his mom, the boards the train again during war time and then again after the war and again to go and bury his wife and again he boards the train as a transient, and finally he boards the Gospel train, so to speak. Ultimately, we are all invited on board.

Lyrics
Train?s Coming To Take Me Home by Scott Aycock
Copyright 2000
Well I was only five years old
When the train pulled into the depot
My daddy said son don?t you be afraid
You?ll love riding that great big train
Chorus:
Well I don?t know but I been told
Trains coming to take me home 2x?s
My momma was waiting at the depot
It was mid-december and the air was cold
She held me close she held me tight
As my daddy faded into the night
Chorus:
When I was 18 and in my prime
I got a message on the telegraph line
Your numbers up and it?s time to go
And fight a war that?s not your own
Chorus
Way back in 69
I heard the train comin? on down the line
I was standin? in south Vietnam
To catch that train and head for home
Chorus
From Saigon to the usa
I left my plane and I heard ?em say
Baby killer your gonna pay
It?s peace not war and it?s here to stay
Man I tell you that wasn?t my scene
So I asked a man which way to New Orleans
He pointed the way to Grand Central station
And I?m here to tell ya? I was losin? patience
Chorus
I met my wife a Southern Bride
She was my joy, She was my pride
Ten years late my girl she died
And I boarded that train for another long ride
I took her up to Tennessee
Where I buried her with her family.
Chorus
I left Tennessee full of grief
Traveled the country to find relief
Jumping trains I traveled alone
Where I laid my head I made my home
Started out young, ended up old
Chorus
Gazing at the stars so bright
I think about that distant light
Of the train as it breaks the night
And I board it for one final ride
Chorus
I?m heaven bound and earthly-gone
And almost to the end of this song
Some of you been waitin? long
To catch that train and head for home
Chorus
So cup your ears and tilt your head
Cuz train be comin? up around that bend
Listen up ya?ll
