If You Don't Mind

Story Behind The Song

The chorus was written years ago when I lived in North Carolina. I sung it to a friend and she said, "That sounds like beach music!", which is a style really popular in the Carolinas. That sort of led me to writing a beach metaphor into the bridge. The song finally finished itself suddenly one summer, when I hung out on the beach a lot and looked for seashells that looked like guitar picks. I'd returned home from living away for a few years and was working to get past feelings of rejection, inadequacy and trying to finally accept myself for who I am. I wanted to connect myself with the world by writing a really upbeat song that every single person could relate to, and I think I have.

Song Description

This song evokes images of putting your feet up and relaxing on the front porch with an old friend. Every one of us can look back and say we've hurt someone and been hurt, we feel awkward and misunderstood at times. We all need a safe place. This song is like talking to a best friend you can tell anything.

Lyrics

Had I stayed
I never would've met you
But rest assured
I never will forget you
My words
May at times upset you
But I never meant
To hinder or beset you

Now I admit that I
I take up a lot of space
And I've made mistakes
I wish I could erase
Well I know this life,
This life is not a race
But I'm still running,
I'm running just in case

Cause just like everybody else
I'm one of a kind
So let me overstep my bounds
If you don't mind
And we can sit a spell
Just to pass the time
And I'll just be myself
If you don't mind

Now it's different when you grow up and move away
You go home and it's all but not the same
I hate it cause there's no one else to blame
Cause I know that I
I'm the one who's changed

Cause just like everybody else
I'm one of a kind
So let me overstep my bounds
If you don't mind
And we can sit a spell
Just to pass the time
And I'll just be myself
If you don't mind

Shells are never as pretty once you take them off the beach
Like anything else you've gotten that was once out of reach
And what of the ones you discard for lack of perfection?
They're contently unaware they are objects of your rejection

I wish I was, I wish I was
I wish I was...

I wish I was like every body else,
One of a kind
So let me overstep my bounds
If you don't mind
And we can sit a spell
Just to pass the time
And I'll just be myself
If you don't mind
Yeah I'll just be myself if you don't mind
And you can be yourself cause I don't mind
