The King (Instrumental)

Story Behind The Song

A life-long fan of Elvis Presley, this tune was penned by the band's lead singer during a time in his life when he not only found himself overweight, but also watching a documentary called "Almost Elvis". The lyrics were written in response to this film, in a self-deprecating manner...having always wanted to be Elvis - but realizing his current 'size' -as well as the era which these ETA (Elvis Tribute Artists) were focusing on - were far from 'hitting the mark' when it came to The King's greatness.

Song Description

"The King" was written as part of a song cycle (which also bred "My Kung Fu" and some other as of yet unreleased material) that focused on power chords, and musical simplicity so as to allow the lyrical melody to 'breathe'. As the song progressed, it became something more of what could have been found on The Beatles' oft-referred to "White Album".

Lyrics

Dyed my hair jet black, grew my sideburns out and everything.
Bought me some blue suede shoes and a silver horseshoe pinky ring.
Shakin' my hips my upper lip took all this time just to get it right.
Oversized aviator glasses even in darkest night...

You take too much time gettin' ready.
No time brother you're gettin' heavy.
Years have...gone by now...since he went an' left the scene!
Hey now! Don't confuse that big fat man with the King...no!!

Cruisin' around the town - just bought a used pink Cadillac...
Once you have gone this far you know there is no turning back!

You take too much time gettin' ready
No time brother you're gettin' heavy
Years have gone by now since he went an' left the scene
Hey now! Don't confuse that big fat man with the King...

You take too much time gettin' ready...
Hey now! Don't confuse that big fat man with the King...
Hey now! Don't confuse that big fat man with the King...
Hey now! Don't confuse that big fat man with the King...
