Nothing to Fear

Story Behind The Song

British Blues Rocker Chris Rea is best known for his hits Road to Hell and Fool as well as others. He describes this song well: "Nothing to fear is a song about a European guy welcoming Muslims, and the gist of the story is that if you show us we have nothing to fear, you know, there's gonna be no problem. And it's asking them to show a sign of peace. And the song also applies to a man and a woman, or any relationship, in it's beginning, and it's basically saying, you know, you've got to show each other that there's nothing to fear. You know, it was once the Russians, we all had to be frightened of the Russians, then we had to be frightened of the Chinese, and at the moment, for the last year, it's been this... the coming of the Muslims thing. All Muslim guys I know are great guys, and frankly, basically it's been me saying I don't mind living next door to one. A lot of people wonder, they have this fear of what's it all gonna be about, but their values, their basic values are very very good, and, in my view, needed in many cases in Europe." Although this song was written in 1992 it is more relevant now than ever. We definitely heard the Middle Eastern sound in his song, grabbed it, jumped on it and even accentuated it. We did so by using the saz (Turkish folk stringed instrument and a vocal mawal (Middle Eastern vocal improvisation). This allowed us to play and sing in the minor and half tone scales. Then we added doumbek (Middle Eastern drum) and riq (Middle Eastern tambourine) and fueled it all with keyboards, bass and drums.

Lyrics

I feel your heat in dusty whispers
The wind is cold around your moon
It's getting hard to keep our distance
I know your time is coming soon
Don't point your dream on my horizon
Don't take your rose too far from home
Please don't forget we're not each other
Each soul has black thorns of his own

I see you dancing
Your song is clear
You've got to show me, got to show me
There's nothing to fear
Nothing to fear
I have my loved ones you have yours
So let us gaze upon the feast
In God's own name let's eat together
In God's own name please come in peace
See how our children play together
While you and me we stand alone
I know we'll never be each other
If I leave you leave me alone

I see you dancing
Your song is clear
You've got to show me, got to show me
There's nothing to fear
Nothing to fear
