Heart of the Beast

Story Behind The Song

This song was written at the onset of the first Gulf War. We were furious and terrified to say the least. We feared the worst; including that the Bible's Revelations was about to come to fruition and take us to the end of the world; especially since it involved the cradle of civilization - the Middle East. We purposely used symbology to represent the Middle East: "the falcon's wing, everything is holy but noting is sacred - their modesty leaves everyone naked, veiled mysterious no man can see her, etc.". We expressed our outrage in the chorus -- that if it wasn't for the black blood / oil we would not have been there and that all eyes are on the Middle East. " Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast The whole world hopes on the middle EAST Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast All eyes on the middle east " Now with so much world focus on the Middle East it has become more true now than ever. During that time we actually felt that this song should have been the anthem for the Gulf War! Since we are a Middle Eastern World Music band we took advantage of our traditional instruments. These include the mizmar (Middle Eastern double reeded horn), doumbek (Middle Eastern drum), riq (Middle Eastern tambourine), def (frame drum) and the plaintive Arabic vocals wailing in the background. Our western keyboards, guitars, bass, drums and funky rockin' groove fueled it all.

Lyrics

Lust is the mistress of anger's disease
The gilded falcon drops us to our knees
Everything's holy but nothing's sacred
Their modesty leaves everybody naked
Judgment rides on the falcon's wing
Like the beating of the drummers' hands that sting
All but the innocent have the right
To take what's theirs on this callous night

CHORUS:
Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast
The whole world chokes on the middle east
Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast
All eyes on the middle east

Veiled - mysterious no man can see her
Not even his own eyes can appease her
They danced their dance from the beginning of time
It's a culture dancin on the edge of the line.

CHORUS:
Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast
The whole world hopes on the middle EAST
Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast
All eyes on the middle east

Beauty and love ya see it in their face
It's the cradle of civilization for the whole human race
Now's the time to change the words of this song
Let's all try to prove revelations wrong

CHORUS:
Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast
The whole world hopes on the middle EAST
Black blood pumps from the heart of the beast
All eyes on the middle east
