hello concrete man, thank you for adding my duet version of Dirty Mama to your list, I'm flattered buddy, many thanks, all the best Warren Hein
bLOB b - Thank you for your review of "Corn Liquor and Marijuana". It is kinda between a sketch and a finished song. I was practicing my production chops. THe echoed line was on purpose. I have thought since that I would remove it from the last verse, and only have it on the 2nd and 4th line of the 2nd. Am in process of rerecording it now that I have newer/better gear, and have listened to this version for a bit. Thanks again... Matt
Thanks for your review anyway, although I appreciate the perspective of the recording side of it, I don't think your critique was clear enough in explaining your thoughts on why you say for instance "Lacks Originality". Is it because you view bad recordings themselves as non-original, or is it because the song isn't original, that it sounds like something you've heard before. Your review is appreciated, but if you're going to critique a negative point, then please explain the reasons for the critique point. You correctly explained the bad recording...thanks for that. You didn't explain the critique for the other points, both good and bad. I look forward to your next review of one of my songs. Thanks.
I thought I was clear. But really, if I cannot hear a word you are saying, how could I judge it for originality? No offense intended at all. Without hearing THE SONG I cannot rate any aspect of it.
Well, firstly, to say it's a bad recording is a good point, and is something I'm very clear with, as I unforunately don't have the means to do any better. Secondly, to clarify the "I cannot hear a word you are saying" is great, as now I know that you can't "hear a word I am saying". Thanks for your critique.
As an afterthought, how can you even critique "lacks originality" then if you don't know what I'm saying? Do you listen to mumbling often? lol
Dude.....
All good man. I appreciate your points, but the whole reason I said other stuff is that the explanation wasn't clear man. There isn't offense taken, but the point I'm getting at is just on the critique wasn't clear, nor defined, but still, I appreciate it. Seriously, two things. 1) Thanks for bothering to put the effort in, in the first place. 2) I DO appreciate the perspective of the bad recording, although this isn't something that will change unless finances change (and therefore, that is good reason for "bad recording" critique), and 3) I hope you continue to give critique for me and for others, but just want to show that sometimes what is said isn't clear to the artist/songwriter, and when the opportunity arises, we ALL (such as me and my bad recording) need to be shown what parts might need work.
THank you for reviewing my song "Corn Liquor and Marijuana". Yes, it needs some lead and drums...there is a bass in there, just not mixed / eq'd properly. I do all my own recording and producing, hoping to get good enough to put out a cd on my own soon.......my hard drive died and I had not backed anything up for a month or so...got a dedicated drive for that now....thanks again!
Hey Paul - thanks for your review of my song "So Elusive". I would love to know HOW to do the things you commented on...just learning the guitar and the recording thing after 35 years as a bassist. Any guidance you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Hey, the trick is to listen to songs that you like and if try to emulate their mix...let's say you have 2 guitars and you hear on on the left side like around 10 o'clock positiion and the other is all the way to the right...then the drums have audience perspective or drummer perspective...it really is easy, just takes a little time to find what works for you but as I say, just emulate you favorite artist and at the end you'll come up with your own ways...
Thank you for your review of "So Elusive. I am just starting out learning recording techniques, (part time for about a year). When you say the recording is "brittle", where should I look to address that? In the way the parts lay together? Or maybe eq on one or more tracks? or eq on one or more tracks until the parts lay together smoothly? ... :P
Hey, it can be a variety of things. I'm listening to it again and it could be your mics (did you use a USB mic), an interface (firewire or USB), DAW, mixing is definitely a factor, and mastering is an elusive (forgive the pun) art and science. I've been doing it for 10 years now and I still don't feel as though I can get my tracks to sound as full and pumped as modern tracks. It's a trial and error learning process. The song itself is actually pretty cool. Very catchy. I'm curious as to what equipment you used. I would seriously recommend a good book on home recording, mixing and mastering. Two books that I would recommend are: http://www.amazon.com/Home-Recording-For-Musicians-Dummies/dp/111810689X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334026459&sr=1-1 1 http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Audio-Second-Edition-Science/dp/0240808371/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334026499&sr=1-1 2 But mixing is definitely a factor. It's about EQ, panning, effects, etc. Mastering is not about normalizing or adding volume to the tracks. Mastering is about judicious use of EQ, compression, limiting, and dithering to ensure the track remains sounding clean. One thing I've learned, is you're not really adding anything in mastering, you're just bringing to light what is already there. I'm listening to your other songs, and I really enjoy them, it's just the recording process is something to learn over time. Welcome to my connections concreteblue!
I have Huber's "Modern Recording Techniques", and read everything on the web i can get. Also watch Pensado's place.... "So Elusive" was recorded with a Maudio Firewire 410 interface and a Presonus Blue tube dp, AT2020, AKg se5/ce1 and a Sterling st51, the electric guitar was played through a VOX da5 amp and micced with an old EV628L, mixed in REAPER.
thanks for the input...:)
Hey Fellas - thanks for the kind review of my song "So Elusive". It was recorded at my desk with $200 worth of gear i bought on ebay. I am new to recording/engineering/producing my own songs, any insight I get is much appreciated. I like your stuff. Is that a sleighbell in "Here's to getting over You"?
Hey man no problem I really dig the song. We definitely understand we recorded our demos in my living room lol keep it up man!
Thank you for the nice review of my song "So Elusive". Are you sampling and looping, or composing, or both?
You're welcome, and yes I'm doing both.

Thanks for your kind review of my song "Everyday". Apparently people either love it or hate it...lol.... Matt
Hello - thank you for reviewing my song "Everyday". I am new at this. Is it really that obvious?..lol.....Liked your songs.. matt
Hey Matt! It's the process and seeing how you grow and change that makes it fun & worthwhile. You'll be amazed at where you go if you keep at it.
hELLO - THANK YOU FOR THE REVIEW OF MY SONG "hOLE IN mY hEART". i AM JUST TRYING TO LEARN RECORDING AND PRODUCTION, AND THIS IS AN EARLY ..oops, caps lok pinkie! (almost) final mix from my efforts. Still trying to get what sounds good in my studio to sound close to the same on the Internet stream, things of that nature. Thanks for the support and kind comments. matt
You are welcome...keep refining that "raw talent!" Mrs. Kate :) in Florida
Hey - Thank you for your review of "Hole in my Heart". Yes, the Bvox arrangement is straight off of an Elvis record. As for the lyrics, it is a true story.....thanks again for the positive comments. Matt
Oh, also liked your song "Fallen Idols" so much I shared it on my FB page.
Great! Thank you! Look forward to hearing more of your stuff!
Just saw your response on the bb about how to "get it" here on BJ. Excellent thought process, and reading it made me want to check out your page. Nice stuff! This isn't my daily cup o joe, but I like it! Nice work!
Thank you Blue. Pleased the rant was useful to you. Take care and feel free to connect. N
Thanks for the comment and review. Was really enjoying your song "Hole In My heart" gotta great voice
Thank you for reviewing my song "everyday". Welcome to Broadjam!
Thanks for your review of my song "Everyday". Yes, it is kind of a sketch right now...
THank you for the review of "Hole in My Heart". There is bass in the mix, I had to keep lowering it to try to get it not to overpower my computer speakers. Still sounds great through my Tannoys, though. The Bvox are panned as follows: root:24%; 3rd:34%; 7th: 44%; fx bus, 66%. There is a delay on the vox and a verb on the master bus...thanks again! matt
Thank you for your comments on "Stomping ground". I am always updating my songs so I will take your advice into consideration. Keep writing and recording, you have a talent, so use it to your best potential. Ron Watkins.
..."use it to your best potential."...hmmmm.......always the hard part...
Thanks for your review of Hal and Lula! Liked Hole in my Heart... Bill
Hello - thank you for your review of my song "Everyday". Your assessment of the recording is spot on. Recorded at my desk with an Alesis 2 in interface, presonus Bluetube dp and a Studio Projects B1 mic. Mixed on Altec Lansing multimedia computer speakers...and yes, the guitar was plucked! I am a bassist that is learning recording and guitar as none of my buddies will come over and play for me! I have some better gear now, including some Tannoy 601 monitors and at 40fs headphones, and am planning on re-doing the song soon. Thanks again! matt
Keep it up, Matt. You've definitely got a great voice and we look forward to hearing more!
Hey ,,How are you..I have looked through mu old reviews and I do not see yours in my completed section.. That said I am listening to it now..It is a cool little song..You have a very unique voice..That is a good thing I think.. Whoever did do your review said nice things I hope..But I find little kindness in the Artist reviews..I have decided not to ask my peers.. So you have me confused with who did it,,I just started using the sight again in March..Again Good Luck to you..Its tough out there..Peace Steve..
pardon me if this got posted twice....thanks for reviewing my song "Hole in My Heart". We share the Disciple's name...
Good Stuff!
Thanks for reviewing my song "The Runner". Appreciate your comments and totally get where you are coming from with the mix. I still have a lot to learn in all aspects and mixing is one of the hardest part for me. Listening to "Hole in my Heart as I write. Great song, love your vocal inflection, really sells the emotion. Well written.
Thanks Jeff. Had the pleasure of reviewing another of your songs recently. Keep on keeping on....
