Big thumbs up to Broadjam regarding their new features in the Licensing Opportunities section. The only thing an artist appreciates more than a great publisher, is the ability to cut a bad one loose, very cool of Broadjam to return some of the power to the artists. N
Not sure the feedback is a good idea lol
It is:)
Agreed! Great idea this new update including feedback :-)
We have to be careful not to burn any bridges with the new feedback option. Maintain a professional attitude at all times.
(Gripping bottle of scotch while swaying over keyboard.) "You wouldn't (hickup), you wouldn't (Hickup!) You wouldn't know good music if it sat on your face and- Oh look, pizza! Hold my beer! I'm going swimming!"
Hahaha
It's kind of like having the option to review a religiously charged production. You can... But should you? (Chuckles.)
Thanks so much for the very gracious review of Ominoso :-) Very much appreciated.
Hey Doug, my pleasure, great stuff!
Hello CL. Whereabouts in FL are you? I am near Jax. Thanks for the review of Fearsome Blues Instrumental. Just for fun, you might want to hear it w/ lyrics; I bet you'll be surprised: http://www.broadjam.com/artists/songs.php?artistID=24409&mediaID=468594&play=true 1 Thanks again, Mrs. Kate
Hey Kate, my pleasure doing the review! yes what a nice surprise to hear it with lyrics, sounds great as well! I'm down in Hollywood Sunny South FL ;-)
Have a great day. I was just down in Ft. Lauderdale on my tour last week.... MK
Here you go. You can hear the differences pretty well immediately. http://www.broadjam.com/artists/songs.php?artistID=61621&mediaID=681731 1
Man I hear you loud and clear, definitely a big difference. I my humble opinion it's like we were saying about the subtle tweaking ...I think it went over a little bit on the high end and now it almost sounds too bright and harsh mainly at louder levels! Oh sorry man for my honesty, I go through the same process here comparing masters :-) as a matter of fact I have to approve a master tonight for a Jazz record that I just mixed and I'm waiting for the masters from Ron McMaster from Capitol Matering, in LA, should be a fun night! It is tricky to find those right frequencies, sometimes trying different brand of eq plug ins helps, they all sound a little different even when applying the same curves... Good luck man and once again keep in touch!
Hello Claudio, Wanted to swing in and take a look at your profile after a solid review on "Catfight's 2012" master. It's interesting. For the first time in my career I gave up the keys to the mastering process and handed it to someone else. Back then I was just starting to understand how audio acoustics work in a digital format, and my sessions with Steve really helped my have a better understanding on "the loudness" war. Steve was all about nailing a dynamic mix that worked at "all volumes" but sounded best at really high volumes. I watched him work and listened to the results on several productions through several sets of monitors, and as he turned out master after master, I started to see a trend in the way he was finalizing each production. It was much less heavy handed than my own approaches to mastering. More subtle. Thing is... My band and I would compare mixes. We'd listen to my own masters on the very same production and then we'd listen to the professional's masters. We noticed we couldn't turn my own mixes up as loud before speakers tended to distort, that Steve's masters tended to perform better on all platforms, and that when I pushed my own mixes for the extra "crispness" in the high end... We lost the clarity we wanted at louder volumes. Especially with all the low end getting in the way. I came back and did a different master of Catfight recently. Oddly, that track was never picked up, and I had to gut the vocals to shop it as an instrumental and get it signed. Crazy huh? Such a wild production... So much potential. Gutted for the sake of commerce. (sad face.) I hear what you're saying though. I listened to several of your own mixes and that "shiney" quality to your mixes is certainly present. I can't seem to get Rock to sound as dynamic and deep as I can get electronic to sound. Orchestration is sometimes very similar depending on the timbres I'm using. I've found sometimes getting clean mixes has everything to do with not only getting clean recordings, but using instruments that have a good presence with their timbre's qualities. It all starts at the ground level you know? If a guitar sounds muddy, the whole mix may become endangered by not observing that reality when I turn it up too loud or add too much compression. Grammy Nominee eh? That explanins the Genelecs. lol. I've got a pair of 8040s myself. Changed my life!!! (Smiles.) I can't mix on anything else now. Wish I had those Genelecs when I produced Catfight. Might be an entirely new experience. You collaborating these days? I like your straight forward approach to the format. I could do a lot with that in my mixes. N
Hey Nathaniel! Nice to receive your message! Man let me begin by saying that I heard a fraction of your music on Broadjam and it's not good, it's great!! I love finding these jams every now and then... The conversation about mixing and mastering I guess is endless but as a general rule the better the tracking and sound selection, I guess the easier it is to make it sound good for whatever style. I try to treat every track and mix and master as a unique situation that may require a lot of tweaking(or not much)to get to that "magical" sound. Is hard to explain but you know you'll hear the mixes/masters at different systems and volumes and you go back time and again and they always sound good, because they achieved that "magic" sweet spot where everything just rings the right way for that particular track. And yes, I agree sometimes less is more when it comes to mastering, whether is on outboard gear or on Ozone :-) The "loudness war" situation, what can I say, I'd much rather have the flexibility sometimes of leaving some breathing room in the mixes and masters but sometimes we just do what needs to be done... like you said "for the sake of commerce"! Argh! I have had my NS10's for a long long time and working in the same room and really got used to working with them but I love switching to my Genelecs 1029 A with the sub to get out of the "mid range bubble" of the NS 10's and have an A/B comparison right there with matching volumes. That really helps me make adjustments that I otherwise may have not detected if relying in only one pair.... and mixing/mastering in low volumes and hi volumes also brings out these discrepancies I find... Hey I am open to any collaboration opportunity we may get! Please keep in touch! Claudio
When I purchased my set a few years back they told me to avoid the sub... Too hard to balance in an uncontrolled environment like my own. I usually have to pop a mix off and then plug a macbook Air into the DTS system in the living room before I can really tell how that low end will shine with actual subs. The genelecs do a great job filling the space, but alas, I won't be mixing for drum and bass. lololol My room space is questionable acoustically. I haven't worked in a calibrated space for over a decade. (Cringes with a smile.) The loudness war is what it is. "Get it as loud as you can without losing that sweat expansion compression feeling. Only problem with that is when I master for an album. Volume for track to track will vary. Some tracks are just naturally louder, others were recorded better, others just don't like to be loud... Ha. The underscore library I've been producing for lately tends to shy away from overly aggressive sound. They're all about the milk & honey, but prefer it chilled to hot (laughs.) If you'd be down to working on some minimal ambient beds, I may have several that could use the extra player, what have your inspirations been leaning to lately? I'm still contemplating my next move after I wrap up with this underscore thing. Might be cool to chop up some guitar riffs and apply it to EDM. What do you think? N
Yeah, honestly I'm no speaker expert, I know I had to do some adjustments on my Genelec EQ Settings for my room but my space is small and completely DEAD! I have treated walls, ceiling and carpet, nothing fancy but it works and I hear no reflections.... Oh, and I know the feeling of having to walk out of the studio to make sure it sounds good, I do the same and go to my living room with a consumer Sony deck amp and my old cheap Event analog monitors ;-) Just gives me that confirmation! I hear you about some libraries not wanting an exploding mix, I sent one out today that in the final stages I actually cut down 1 db overall on the master no to be louder than their stuff... Hey, too many inspirations lately and too little time but I'd be happy to make time to collaborate on some stuff with you. I'm a bit swamped finishing some projects within the next week or 2 but lets organize and make it happen! Talk soon! Claudio
I hear you regarding time, I've got a sep/oct deadline for my yearly output and I'm grinding it out while I can. I shoot out new productions very frequently. Everything is pretty much a collaboration invitation if someone has something to offer. I'm not very picky as to who steps up always, I'll entertain anything if the pitch is reasonable, just let me know if you hear anything you gravitate to. Best wishes, now that you've connected, you'll receive an email whenever I promote new cues. Just chime in whenever the urge strikes, feel free to ignore everything else:) (Chuckles.) N
Awesome man, glad we connected! I'm gonna hit you up on skype once the dust settles over here and we'll talk further... love that sense of humor! Peace! Claudio

Where can I find better strings and brass? lkb
There are so many great sounding libraries for strings and brass but what you can use, will depend on your recording and computer software set up. I know "Vienna Simphonic Library" is among the best but they can be expensive... I'd recommend doing a search on the internet on "strings and Brass" sound library or "Orchestral sounds". Hope this helps!
Hey Malcolm, many thanks for the 5 stars and adding to your playlist the track "Destiny or Coincidence". I just listened to a few of your tracks and really enjoyed it! Keep in touch and all the best! Claudio
