Producer Bio: ChyLL WiLL
Many producers credit themselves with making music for everybody, but Chyll Will has the discography to back up his words. With a musical arsenal of nearly a dozen conventional instruments and computer programs, he dances on the digital vs. analog tightrope that many producers struggle to tip toe across. Need further proof? Get a calling card and ask the artists and producers he's worked with on three continents.
"I believe working overseas, so far away from home, gave me a sense of freedom to practice many different styles and techniques," Chyll admits. "Don't get me wrong, America is nothing short of being culturally diverse, but there are some restrictions there and that wasn't the case at all once I stepped off that plane."
Despite getting his start in church choir and writing poetry as a child, Chyll found his niche in playing instruments and making beats. After beginning with drums and FL Studio 4, Chyll's arsenal of musical weapons now includes piano, tenor saxophone, trumpet, and electric and bass guitar, along with digital options like the Motif XS and Reason. A relentless work ethic of 20 beats per day and personal networking built his buzz to earn him a performance slot at an invite-only "Best of the Best" music showcase. There, he met the creative services director of SoSoDef Records--home of multiplatinum producer/songwriter Jermaine Dupri.
"It was just an informal introduction, but it was a driving force for me," Chyll remembers. "I was finally realizing that people were actually listening. It pushed me outside the box creatively."
That change wasn't only in his music: as soon as he graduated high school, he moved to Italy at age 18 to find more opportunities. Using a sound fueled by soul samples, Chyll garnered radio interviews and music showcases, and he began working with dozens of new artists and other producers in the area. After a year and change of building his reputation, he got a concerned phone call from his father with terrible news: in a backup gone wrong, he had accidentally erased all of his son's music back home.
"I lost my entire music library, every genre/style you can think of," Chyll says. "I knew it was an accident and later accepted it as a challenge to grow. Everyone who has a passion for something hits a wall and is given an opportunity to walk away from it, or allow it to elevate them to something greater."
That "something" translated into more material, and assembling "The Good Music Project," which is a collective of talented musicians, songwriters, producers and artists from all over the world. He also moved to Okinawa, Japan in 2009, where he now operates his full home studio. He has also currently in the lab with North Carolina rapper/producer Rain (NC), and Dougie Fresh's son Slim (of Square Off Gang), and an in-house producer for Internet sensation ShaSha Jones, whose current collaborators have worked with Ne-Yo, Mary J. Blige and Michael Jackson.
"I really approach all my projects from the perspective of a creator, not so as a musician/producer," Chyll explains. "My specialty right now is just creating the sound requested or desired from my clients and conveying it in a way that is musically and artistically well-versed. I just want to make good music!"
