Bio
Singer/Songwriter, producer, recording engineer and author (REMIX- Electronic Musician Books), Bruce Gerrish is a past winner of the Billboard Achievement Award and a provincial finalst in the Budweiser Searh for Talent. But songwriting is at the root of Bruce Gerrish's talent. It's the glue that ties everything else together. Bruce has been writing and performing his own music for over 30 years and has developed an extensive original song catalog that incorporates a wide variety of styles and feels. Bruce grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he began playing music by the age of twelve. His earliest mentor was the father of his good friend John, Dr. Henry Blackburn, a brilliant soprano sax and clarinet player, who hosted frequent house party concerts for visiting jazz musician dignitaries from around the world. Eventually, Bruce learned to play the guitar more extensively from the late Dave "Snaker" Ray, of Koerner, Ray and Glover fame and later on from Sean Blackburn (no relation), a beloved Twin Cities entertainer.
In high school Bruce began to perused the art of songwriting with Ted Unseth, another local icon and leader of the Wolverines Orchestra, who ran a songwriting and poetry program through the public school system. Shortly after he graduated, Bruce and John moved to New Orleans, where Henry's friends ran the world famous Preservation Hall, a funky jazz concert hall in the heart of The French Quarter. They took the two boys under their wing and soon the they were both engrossed in the New Orleans Jazz scene. Bruce cut his musical teeth on Louisiana's rich musical tapestry and he broadened his style even further with stints in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, San Francisco and more recently Vancouver, British Columbia where he now resides. His songs are are akin to his life; cutting. catchy and curious.
