Biography
Pianist
Composer
At the young age of seven Laura remembers begging her parents for piano lessons. Her family had an upright piano which stood alone in a corner, unplayed, until her parents finally conceded and enrolled her with an accomplished pianist that lived nearby and taught out of her home. Growing up in Eugene, Oregon, lent itself to many hours of practicing while there were rainy, gray skies outside. Laura's teacher soon noticed that she played differently than her other students, playing more from the heart, something that could not be taught. At the age of 12, her first composition, 'Snowfall', was added to her repertoire and often played at talent shows, recitals, and group competitions. Many people commented on how the music moved them and how the melodies stayed, almost hauntingly, in their minds. Laura went on to participate in auditions through the National Fraternity of Student Musicians. Through these auditions students are judged on individual merit in the areas of accuracy, continuity, phrasing, pedaling, dynamics, rhythm, tempo, tone, interpretation, style and technique. Laura auditioned in the all Sonatina programs for three consecutive years having won the National Gold Award in 1981 and District Bronze in 1982 and 1983.
Through years of accomplishment and numerous compositions, Laura has developed her own style. Much of her work could be classified as New Age with a Classical flair. Her music is timeless and has deep heartfelt meaning. When you listen to her music, and hear the piano's strong voice, you can't help but be entranced by the beautiful melodies. Laura has written lyrics for much of her pieces, having also been inspired to write. Some of her musical influences include Jim Brickman, David Benoit, and Ramsey Lewis.
Laura is currently composing new songs and in studio at Winston Recording in Mesa, AZ.
When asked how she comes up with the music, Laura says; "I don't intentionally sit down to compose a song, the song usually just comes to me and I let it flow from my fingers, I just play what I feel."
