A refreshing break from the normalcy that often plagues the airwaves,
amid melodic tunes that compel you to halt in your tracks to
investigate the culprit, illustrates the sound of Zaq Coldly.
Zaq invites you on a rhythmic ride through his mind where you
will uncover the pure genius that resides within the thoughts
of a luminous artist who is never scared to let his art speak
for itself. Best described as an element of his environment
gripped by a surplus of genres beginning in his birthplace of
Plainfield, New Jersey home of P-Funk and George Clinton, Zaq
is able to concoct an elixir that is sure to heal, unite, inspire
and entertain the hardest critic to the enthusiast seeking elevation.
Whether he's spitting lyrics, singing a verse or caressing his guitar
with the unyielding precision, you will dangle on every syllable and
note. Smashing the mundane sameness like a head on collision, mashing
rock and roll and hip hop with rhythm and blues into a package that
delivers honest talent, raw music and relevant themes that keep you
coming back for dose after dose, you realize you are experiencing a
pure artist who travels down a road that many are either afraid to
venture or just unable to find.
Zaq spent his formative years as a close friend of the Outlaws,
a group crafted by Tupac Shakur, and opening for groups such as
De La Soul, The Roots, Erykah Badu, KRS-1, Terror Squad and Run-DMC.
His respect for the game and his merciless grind would help propel
him to new levels of creativity. Armed with a new platform to express
his progressive New Genre music Zaq used the world as a vehicle to
illuminate his raw fiery emotion and produce a rich layered sound.
Zaq would go on to put roots down in Europe and rip shows with the
likes of M.O.P, Busta Rhymes, Nas, Lil' Wayne and the Coup. Zaq is
a musician, producer, vocalist, lyricist, and writer who has penned
songs for Sony BMG artist as well as Dead Prez. He recently added
actor to his arsenal of talent flexing his ability as a live theater
stage performer in sold out shows as well as the big screen, appearing
in "Death by Night Club" from the creators of the 40 Year Old Virgin
and Transformations which garnered awards from the San Francisco Film
Festival as well as the New York Hip Hop Film Festival.
Don't get it misconstrued, this enlightened and colorful entertainer
has an expansive repertoire and displays versatility unparallel to
others. While influences such as Prince keep you guessing along with
his B.L.E.A.C.H B.L.A.Q (Beyond Life's Expectations Always Changing
How Black Lives Are Questioned) mantra, this burgeoning conscious,
minister of music is ready to educate and inspire. Zaq's mission is
to keep them interested at all times and guessing, but let everyone
know the power within and the depth of our creative roots with his
soulful and heartfelt delivery. Zaq knows no boundaries and chooses
to color outside of the margins of life. He doesn't fit into the
proverbial box that most are encompassed into, instead his spirit
soars, his soul filters through the speakers and his music sets
new principles for ingenuity. Catch Zaq breaking records, bouncing
across radio dials, crossing genres and inspiring a new movement.
An artist like Zaq Coldly hasn't been seen so it would be a travesty
to categorize his music and his style. The best way to comprehend is
to just listen, embrace and embark on the journey that is know as
"UGLY" and the leader of the pack, Mr. Zaq Coldly.

Hip Hop Rock Star
Hip Hop Rock Star

2009
By Kurt Nice
Has there ever been a well recieved Hip Hop Rock project?
I don't know. The Everlast 'Whitey Ford' CD was dissed
heavily by the critics. Mos Def's venture into the genre
was criticized and left in obscurity too. Maybe it was
the time period. A lot of projects that surface ahead
of their time suffer the same fate.
But in the era of rappers "Partying like a rock
star...", shadesofhiphopradio.com is proud to present
ZAQ Coldly. His preview CD "Hip Hop Rock Star" is the
nicest mix of Hip Hop and Rock that you may ever witness.
More Hip Hop than Linkin Park, with heavier skateboard
rock influence than Lupe Fiasco, ZAQ puts raw emotion
into clear view with vivid stories of lust, passion,
and daily reality on the edge. On songs like 'I Heard',
which reiterates rumors about some of today's most popular
rappers, in the style of Jadakiss' 'Why', ZAQ showcases
his skills on the mic as an emcee on a straight ahead rap
format. He further illustrates his skills while ripping
over straight ahead rock tracks like 'No Rest 4 Da Wicked',
'Lay Down', 'Monsters'. ZAQ backed by his band UGLY,
shows vocal and writing range by singing hooks and even
whole songs like 'Control' and the sleeper hit 'It's
Phukked Up'! Grimy tales of gun play and violence are
expertly executed on 'Ain't No Thang' and 'Art of War'
featuring Dead Prez. Although there are many features
on this album, collaborations are already in the work
for the next project. In fact look for ZAQ and M.O.P.
collabo real soon.
Diversity may be the best way to descibe ZAQ's
sound. Although he explores only some of the aspects
on 'Hip Hop Rock Star,' and sticks to 2 basic genres,
his depth as a writer can only expand from here. ZAQ
touches on the more introspective side of song writing
with 'Menendez' where he asks "How would it feel to
raise your own murderer?" and addresses the topic of
neglected youth. His most controversial work on the EP
may be on the topic of women and sex. Extremely lurid,
yet eloquently crafted tales of sexual perversion between
consenting adults of the opposite sex recurs on the album
in 'Feel It', 'The One', and 'The Way You Do'in which he
states, "this song ain't for the squeamish, this ain't
about love..." after which he sings on the hook "kiss me,
lick me, suck me..the way u dooooo, rub me, touch me, fuck
me I want you tooooo..." (A full Hip Hop quotable from
this song would only be appropriate for the likes of a
Playboy or Penthouse.)
After getting overseas performance time in Finland,
Germany and the Czech Republic opening for the likes of
Busta Rhymes and M.O.P., ZAQ is ready for home. But is
home ready for ZAQ. If up till now you didn't know what a
Hip Hop Rock Star was, you will after you listen to ZAQ
Coldly. He's the most perfect fusion of two flavas since
the Reese Cup.
