The song was inspired by the idea of saying goodbye, but of various scales. Initially, it refers to a simple goodbye from an everyday kind of situation, and how the author is not good at saying bye. It also goes on to refer to a much more significant goodbye, in the situation of moving and relocating to a new place. Furthermore, it makes reference to the final goodbye of death.

Lyrics
And when I rise to leave my chair
I make it seem that I'm still there
As though I'll be right back- in a flash
And when I turn to leave a room
I stop and stammer like a fool
Trail off mutter on cue- as I bid adieu
No promise that I won't return
'Cause I cannot commit to say forever
But it may be I won't ever again be seen
And so I'll never say goodbye
If I choose to move and relocate
Silently I will fly no trace
Nor vestige of my face, just a clean escape
No promise that I won't return
'Cause I cannot commit to say forever
But it may be I won't ever again be seen
And so I'll never say goodbye
All my possessions have grown too much
And I've amassed so much cluttered junk that weighs me down
All the bags fall into place along the way
When I lie my final time in bed
For once I just might get some rest
I'll not be gone instead- I will just play dead
