Nina's Song

Story Behind The Song

My friend Nina was moving from San Francisco to New York, although both big cities, I was worried about her all on her own out there in the Big Apple, and hence this song was born.

Song Description

When a child or friend makes a big move in their life they are filled with excitement and hope for new experiences, but sometimes their family and friends have some trepidation. This song offers some tips for surviving a big change as a young woman moves into the big city. While the lyrics are comical the message is really that no matter what we love you and want you to be happy and safe, we will miss you once you leave but you can always come back home.

You're leaving us soon to follow your dreams
Reminds me of me long ago
Wondering what path will open to you
Having faith that soon you'll know

But it's scary out there without knowing where
Like walking through blackest night
So here's a few tips to keep you from trips
And help you find the light

Don't ever talk to strangers, Even if they don't seem dangerous
And never ride the subway after dark
Keep track of your drinks, And always trust your instincts
And never jog alone in the park
Use common sense, But keep your innocence
Be edgy but not sharp as a knife

I'd never want to change you
But I've been there too
Just want to keep you safe from strife

Walk like you know where you're going
Even as your fear is growing
And you'll be sure to find your way

Act like you belong there
And soon you'll become stronger
And keep those wolves at bay

Just remember we all love you
We're always thinking of you
And though we're apart you're not alone
Before you even know it
It'll all start to fit
City life will be the best you've known

But don't ever talk to strangers, Even if they don't seem dangerous
And never ride the subway after dark
Keep track of your drinks, And always trust your instincts
And never jog alone in the park
Use common sense, But keep your innocence
Be edgy but not sharp as a knife
It's not just happenstance, Despite our distance
We'll be friends for life
