The Fisherman - Silvina

Story Behind The Song

Silvina asked me to write a song about a fisherman, so I re-read The Old Man and The Sea for inspiration. The song is based on that story, with a slightly different ending.

Song Description

Inspired by "The Old Man and The Sea", a fisherman struggles for days to land his catch. He is a man of strong will and strong faith, which is finally rewarded as he is lifted to heaven and spared any further agony of trying to overcome an insurmoutable t

Lyrics

Floating a mile over soft ocean bed, holding his line as he rested his head.
The fisherman dreams of the lions of yore, majestically prowling the African shore.
The deep gentle waters he does call la mar, for it does sooth his longing for his home so afar.
Then in a flash he is startled awake, to the burden at hand, pulling him to his fate.

For three lonely days and three chilling nights, he?s clung to the line as it pulled him in flight.
Any man lesser would abandon this quest, but this is his life and the challenge he?ll best.
Though his body is cramped and riddled with pain, he will steel all his will and muster again,
All his strength and his courage for sure victory, o?er the denizens of deep water mystery.

Chorus: The wind on the water is playing the tune, of an ancient held truth to what we attune.
That all creatures are sons of the same mother earth, who is wed to the father and given us birth.

He?s lived his life proudly, the salt of the earth, at every life?s challenge he?s proof of his worth.
But the devil is there in the deep pulling fast, (and) even though he knows he will surely outlast,
He prays to the lord and the promise he?ll keep, if only he lives to return to a sleep,
To proclaim his devotion and faith to the one, who gave us all freedom through his loving son.

But the struggle is won in the heart and the mind, his will is as strong as any you?ll find
But now he sees clearly in the misty dawn air, a man walking towards him with long flowing hair,
On the water as morning is breaking anew, he understands fully his time has come due,
So willing he follows and freely ascends, to sit by his father with out end, with out end.

Optional second Chorus: The wind on the water is playing the tune, of an ancient held truth to what we attune.
That all creatures are sons of the same mother earth, who is wed to the father and given us birth.
Brothers and sisters we all stand as one, to honour the memory of he who is one,
With the Father and spirit in true trinity, with whom we will rest for (all) eternity.
