The Leavin' in Your Eyes

Story Behind The Song

It was written to sound like a relationship where the singer knows the other is leaving. Truth is, it was written about my musician friends who pass through town, stay for a night and move on. And about my occassional concern for their safety during their late night drives. And it's about those souls who are living their dream and wouln't have it any other way "...you hunger for the journey in your heart. The morn will dawn and find you gone, and I will mourn your silent song"...

Song Description

This is from the point of view of someone who knows that a friend or loved one is leaving or dying..though the "someone else" has not said so. Always has and always will. The song's focus is on the different literal ways to leave; highway, railroad, ocean, air, death. "As long as there's a road, a rail, an ocean or a sky I will see the leavin' in your eyes". But it is of course a metophorical lament on just how brief our time here is.

Lyrics

The Leavin' in Your Eyes
Jeffrey W. Posey & John M. Greenberg

I can hear the highway callin' you my friend
I can see the leavin' in your eyes
The morn? will dawn and find you gone
The dawn will mourn as you drive on
I can hear the highway callin? you

I can hear the railroad callin? you my friend
Smoke hangin? like your shadow in the sky
The morn? will dawn and find you gone
The dawn will mourn as you roll on
I can hear the railroad callin? you

I can hear you leave before you ever say goodbye
I can feel the tears but you won?t let me see you cry
As long as there?s a road, a rail, an ocean or a sky
I will see the leavin? in your eyes

I can hear the ocean callin? you my friend
I can taste the salted on your kiss
The morn? will dawn and find you gone
The dawn will mourn as you sail on
I can hear the ocean callin? you

I can hear the trail, it?s callin? you my friend
My heart follows like the stubborn cloud of dust
The morn? will dawn and find you gone
The dawn will mourn as you ride on
I can hear the trail callin? you

I can hear our Father callin? you my friend
You hunger for the journey in your heart
The morn? will dawn and find you gone
And I will mourn your silent song
I can hear our Father callin? you
I can hear the ocean callin? you
I can hear the highway callin? you
