Story Behind The Song
I always hated driving across Kansas because the wind never stops blowing. One day, it occurred to me that maybe that would be a good title for a song and I started working on this melody. I finally got the entire melody but the lyric was being stubborn. While working part time in a hardware store, the whole lyric suddenly leaped into my head and I clocked out immediately for lunch, drove home, wrote the entire song, recorded it, and got back to work on time. This is the song that gets the most "has anyone recorded it yet?" or "Why hasn't anyone recorded it yet?" statements.
Song Description
A gift from the ether..."The Kansas Wind" is one my best songs. Written many years ago, it keeps getting strong rections when I pitch it. The head of CBS Records in Nashville has declared that someday it is going to be a monster hit for someone. I wrote it to state the philosophical truism that you can run from your troubles but you cannot run from yourself, and fate will go with you no matter how far you run. You can run but you can't hide from your destiny.

Lyrics
The Kansas Wind by Glenn Warren
In the lonely hearts column of the Boston Globe, she read...
"Man with house looking for a home...
"Needin' a woman to share the rainbow's end;"
They corresponded; He sent train fare;
When she stepped on the platform at the station there...
She felt the fury for the first time of...The Kansas Wind.
He drove her to the chapel at the end of the street;
Told the rev'rend, "Keep the marriage service short and sweet;"
He had ground to plow...and animals to attend;
The wind started screamin' when she whispered, "I do;"
The door blew open, chilled her through and through...
And her soul was blown away on...The Kansas Wind.
Bridge: That night...his calloused hands caressed her body;
1. She shivered from his touch; He thought she felt a thrill;
When he'd gone to sleep...she made herself a promise...
If she ever gets the chance to get away...she will;
But oh...The Kansas Wind can sure blow cold;
Chill your heart right to the bone;
The Kansas Wind can sure blow cold.
With her husband doin' business in town one day...
The traveling man stopped by...Said he'd take her away...
When she told him of the Hell her Kansas life had been;
Though she loved him good, she thought she loved him wrong...
'Cause when he rode away, he wouldn't take her along...
Left her standing there crying in...The Kansas Wind.
Bridge: Now when her husband's calloused hand caress her body...
2. She figures it's her punishment for her sin;
When she dies, she ain't afraid of going to Hell...
She so close now, she knows it well...
She only prays that Hell don't hold no...Kansas Wind.
Oh...The Kansas Wind can sure blow cold...
Chill your heart right to the bone;
The Kansas Wind can sure blow cold...
Ooooo...The Kansas Wind....
