Story Behind The Song

This is the 4th song on Volume 1 of our 3-volume concept album "Grey Expectations" that will be released in mid to late April. The album progresses chronologically from childhood to midlife crisis and is told from the perspective of various characters as they grow older and begin to wrestle with self doubt, external fears, and outside pressure. This song "Love & Hate" is intended to show how our understanding of emotions like LOVE and HATE shift as we become adults. Children genuinely love almost everything and only seem to hate things that don't taste good or aren't a lot of fun. As adults, our attitudes shift. We begin to LOVE things that are "bad" for our physical and mental health while growing to HATE things we don't understand or have been trained to fear. The other thing I wanted to convey in this song is that the negative and cynical views of adults are gradually digested by children as they begin to mature. Kids begin to take on the HATEful and misguided opinions of their parents and other adult figures in their lives. As children we're very susceptible to influence and indoctrination. As a result, our once innocent views of LOVE and HATE are molded into misguided opinions that are passed from generation to generation.... or, they become a great source of mental conflict if we begin to question their validity.
