Obama Thanks for Coming

Story Behind The Song

This song came to me in 2008 shortly after the election of the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. Today we live in a plural America, home to several billion million from diverse traditions and cultures. The fact that President Obama from his humble beginnings fought his way into the White House impressed and intrigued me beyond reason. And the idea that he is a symbol of freedom for all immigrants and minorities in the US struck me like a thunderbolt. And thus the song was born.

Obama, thanks for coming (Lyrics)

Americans, turn around, recognize liberty was never easy
Bloody our history, the penalty for the prize of equality

Obama, thanks for coming

The lamp of equality he lit in the darkness of segregated society
The seed of unity he watered with the blood of the army and the 16th Presidency

Abraham Lincoln, the father who freed the slaves
Although physically liberated, psychologically wounded brutally

Through the heat and dust of injustice and oppression he dared to dream
Brotherhood, nonviolence, unity, justice & peace for all
The panacea for the disease of segregation
The blood of Martin Luther King washed and purified the nation
Freedom at last, free at last, thank God Almighty we are free at last

Finally from the lineage and heritage
Of the great black and white race
Broken are the heavy chains of segregation
From the minds of the new generation

Obama, thanks for coming

Americans, the time has come to bury the coffin of slavery
Engraved on its epitaph died in the 21st century
Exterminated finally by the 44th presidency
Consecrated in the 17th century with the Declaration of Independence

Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, a century later
Eternal nonviolent dream of the one and only Martin Luther King
Audacity of hope in the face of war and adversity
Broken are the heavy chains of segregation
From the minds of the new generation

Freedom at last, free at last
Thank God Almighty we are free at last

Wow - this is very well done. The mix is perfect, the playing is great, the arrangement is sophisticated and interesting, background vocals are thick and lush - it's a great piece of work.
