Jocelyn Bio
Music can serve as the sweetest escape and give unparalleled comfort to many, and for singer/songwriter Jocelyn, music does more than that - it defines her.
Hailing from a multi-racial family, Jocelyn spent her childhood in both Canada and the West Indies, on her grandfather’s native island of Montserrat. Her single-father was more often at work than he was at home and Jocelyn became very adept at looking after herself, choosing Paul Simon, Michael Jackson and Sade to keep her company. By the tender age of 12, after being shuffled between two countries, Jocelyn moved back to Toronto to live with her grandmother for good. Life in a stable home finally began, and with that came the ability to pursue a dream Jocelyn had never told anyone about – to sing. Her grandmother, whom she had an intensely close relationship with, quickly took notice of Jocelyn’s natural abilities and talents, and immediately enrolled her in singing, piano and theory lessons in order for her to hone her craft.
At 14, she was accepted in to the prestigious Claude Watson School for the Arts as a Vocal Major where she continued to train diligently, performing and competing in numerous festivals and competitions. Eventually, the conformity of studying classical music began to take its toll, and Jocelyn began to focus more and more on bringing her own creativity to life, becoming not just a singer, but an artist.
Realizing the importance of understanding both the business and creative aspects of the Entertainment industry, she secured herself an internship at BMG Music Canada. Here, Jocelyn was exposed to life “behind the scenes” and gained a valuable education on how the industry operates. The experience convinced her that not only did she want to be a recording artist, but that she also had the proper ingredients of talent, drive and discipline to become one. Her hard work and determination paid off, and many doors began to open.
Working with a variety of producers from Atlanta to Toronto, and performing at various Toronto showcases such as the renowned Honey Jam, Jocelyn continued patiently to groom her skills. Finally, in the winter of 2004, Jocelyn found a production team that spoke her language within Nucleus Recording Studios, owned by Juno Award-winning record producer Justin Gray. It was there she began collaborating with not only Justin, but with Claytone and AwDAMn of Beatardz Entertainment whose fresh, street-driven, raw sound was the perfect match for Jocelyn’s intimate, powerful vocals and lyrical styling.
Whether it’s the haunting quality of “Beneath The Surface” written by Jocelyn for her mother, in an effort to make more sense of their difficult relationship, or the saucy anthem-style club track “Can A Gurl”, Jocelyn’s music will take you wherever you want to go and to all the places she’s been.
