Dear Helen,
I had the pleasure of reading some your in depth interviews/web articles on your transition into song licensure. The information you provided was invaluable! It led me to these and others sites, and after only a month I succesfully landed my first (small, but significant) licensing deal for two of my original compositions. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Best of luck to you! Sincerely, JC Marble

Hi Helen,

I just wanted to say "Hi" and tell you that I've read some articles that you wrote on Passive Promotion about your experience on licensing your music. It really has inspired me to continue on my own journey. What struck a chord with me the most is that you are also a mom like me. I've played the piano most of my life but never truly appreciated it until the last 5 or so years. I tried my hand at writing lyrics; even took online coursed through SongU but I just couldn't really "get it"- just didn't click for me. Eventually I realized that what I do enjoy is composing, creating music. I discovered the business of music licensing a couple of years ago, and I've been doing as much research as I can about it. I stumbled upon your article last year which led me to signing up with Broadjam, YouLicense, and SonicBids. I've only written 8-10 songs in the last year so I know I need to keep making music. But when it comes to writing music and doing research, I tend to get obsessed with it and barely pay much attention to my family, so I start to feel bad about it, then end up taking a few days off. It's a vicious cycle, really. Time management is a skill that has always been hard for me to master! ugh!! I also just realized today that you actually had a series of articles on Passive Promotion - I thought there was just one article. I definitely plan to read the rest of them. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your experience :o)

Hi. Helen. Congrats on being considered for the commercial placement.I think you would be perfect choice! Awesome job. I entered a commercial song "real good day" but I know it would be a long shot because my song wasn't mixed well and didn't have all the bells and whistles I wanted. My song was more energetic I guess for more of a shopping mall setting. Yours is more lad back, relaxing fit for a commercial of that kind. I'm going to work on my songs before I submit them again. Congrats again! Great job!

Hi Helen Just wanted to say that I love 'Its me', so easy to listen to. I wonder if you might like my song called La La Love, it has a similar light feel to it, let me know what you think. I am use to writing songs which I then prform at gigs but writing for film, adverts is a new field for me, any tips on how to make my songs sound better or more suitable would be much appreciated for you, I can see you have it down to a 'T'. Thank you I look forward to hearing from you Laura from the band Rawkis xx

Hi

Thanks for listening to my stuff. And that's a cool song you wrote.

My main tip is to listen to your own songs side by side with stuff you want to be comparable with. if there is a big difference in quality then there is something wrong, but if you could play them side by side and the quality matches then you're on the right track. I play mine alongside Ingrid Michaelson and Iron & Wine and if they couldn't be on the same radio show then i have work to do! :)

Hi Helen

Thanks, really useful advise. When you are referring to quality do you mean in the overall mix or the melody and lyrics. I havent ever mastered any of my songs so I might look into this. Do you get someone to do this for you? or get someone else to do it? I know some of my friends send theirs off to get mastered. Laura X

Hi

I mean all of it. When they chose songs for placements they are looking for stuff that's comparable with stuff you hear on the radio in your genre.

I record and mix but get someone else to master.
