Thanks Don, I appreciate the review and agree with your opinions. Working on correcting the vocals as we speak. Will try it at a faster BPM. Cheers
Roy, I'm loving the new licensing layout page. Awesome! But I'm a little confused if you see this or not if I post it on my page instead of yours.
Hi Roy, I received and email saying I had received a comment, but when I logged on, the new comment was nowhere to be found. AND I had a comment that someone had made a week ago that I had not received email notification for. Something is rotten in Denmark lol. Maybe you guys can check this out. Thanks!
Update. Having logged on, I went back to the original email and clicked on the link in the email. Then I could see the post. I think all this has to do with the way broadjam handles posts, because I also couldn't see my post to your page unless I went to YOUR profile page.
Don, Thanks for the note and your continued input....You don't have to come to my profile to see your posts to me. Just click on the "By Me" tab at the top of your comments page on your profile and that will show you all of your posts....Thanks for the feedback and we will keep working on this.....All the best, Roy
Hello Don, When you login to your account, just click the "Comments" tab at the top of the page and then click on the link that reads "To Me." This will show you all of the comments made to you by other members. If, however, the comment is not appearing, it's possible that the member who made the post deleted it, as all members have the ability to do this with their posts.
Hello customer support! BJ, have you had any luck posting my video? Seems like a straight video shouldn't pose such a problem..... Thanks!
I am starting to figure out how to maneuver these pages. It seems the "Comments" link under my Name does something different from the 'comments' button in the top right. I think that is causing the confusion.
Hello Rich -- We still have one more video-encoding program we're going to try. It's a matter of extracting the videos in the correct format and then converting them to Flash for the website. Once we have an update for you, we will contact you right away. In the meantime, thank you for your patience.
Don, good point. You are correct. The "Comments" button at the top right is your edit comments page where you can block users, delete comments, etc. The other comments link is a list of comments that we think you might be interested in reading.
A forum would be good! Also, the ability for user input regarding similar artist, genre, mood rather than just the listed choices. Thanks

Hi Don ! how are you doing ? Thanks for the add , regards , Marie.
103 plays in 29 days. Yeeha! My 1 month anniversary is on Thursday. My thanks goes out to all of you who have listened!
Rock on Don! I have been here for months....it took me 2 months to hit that number!
same here
Roy, is there a way to browse by song plays, greatest to smallest? I'd love that! I'm about to reach my 'big' 100 mark , which pails in comparison to others I'm sure--maybe not bad for a 1 month membership who knows. And secondly, do you wake up at night wondering if you've answered all your posts? LOL. Dude, how do you keep up!
Don, That's a good suggestion. It's on the list and will consider it at some point in a future update.....BTW: 100 song plays in a month is pretty good. Clearly you have music others want to hear. Secondly, not only do I wake up wondering if I answered them, I wake up wondering if I answered them correctly. Sometimes I get moving a little quickly and when I re-read them I have left out a key word that can completely change the context. Thank God for spell checking and proof reading.....Regards, Roy
Roy, you've probably answered every possible question at least once. Why not create a searchable answer file?
Don, Another good idea....We do have the faq/help section which offer answers to questions much more eloquently than I do. Your suggestion is certainly worth discussing. Maybe there is a demand for a different format than the faqs......Regards, roy
Roy, does placing a song in the FREE section mean it's royalty free for use in projects, broadcasts, etc? Or is it just a free download?
Don, Good question....Placing a song in the Free Songs section on Broadjam only provides a free download. Years ago, we had a few members wanting the option to give away a song so that's why we created this section. Currently, there are about 2,500 free downloads. Each member is allowed to mark 1 song in their catalog as free. One other note: If you are using this feature, it might be a good strategy to change your designated free song periodically. This will keep you at the top of the list......And one other note: If you wish to offer more than one song for free, the transmit function enables you to send as many free songs as you wish to anyone.....Some choose not to offer their songs for free and others do, so that's why we leave it up to the individual. Hope this helps.....Roy
I fear the general public of young indie film makers would not know this and would assume that FREE meant available for fair use.
I guess the way to get higher scores on reviews for your reviews is to give the songs you're reviewing higher scores. I noticed that the songs I gave 4s and 5s to rated my reviews consistently higher and the songs I have 2s and 3s to rated my reviews consistently lower. It's simply human psychology at work here. Do these ratings really mean anything other than we like those who like us?
Who said 'opinions are like butt wholes. Everyone has one"?
Hey Roy, What's a stem file?
A google search didn't even reveal an answer to this one, but from what I've been able to deduce, a stem file is an individual track before it's mixed down with all the others.
Michael, A stem file can be an individual raw track, but some refer to an unmixed multi-track recording as a stem file as well. If someone would request a stem file from you, they are generally referring to the multi-track recording file and probably are interested in a remix. Some believe that stems are raw with no fx and others would expect fx. It's always good to clarify what the other party is requesting as there seems to be a few definitions floating around......All the best, Roy
Yeah, there are a few definitions floating around. Like Roy says, good to clarify. I mostly see stem used to describe a submix of tracks. For example if someone requests a stem of the background vocals, they probably mean a stereo mixdown of all the tracks that make up only the background vocs.
If you check out acid planet by Sony they have remix contests that provide stems from different artists for remixes.
Thanks, Roy, for listening to my stuff!
Don, You're welcome...Best of luck...Roy
Hey, Roy. Luvin' the site. I tell every composer I run into about it. I should get smart and send them an affiliate link. Question: Is there (where can I find) an industry standard fee chart/guideline with price ranges for selling/licensing song material to different media outlets?
Don, We are calling a few friends for some info....With that said, my very favorite book on the money breakdown in the music business is Music, Money and Success by the Brabec brothers. If you read only the first chapter, you will have a great understanding of the publishing world. Hope this helps.....Roy
Thanks, Roy. I'll be interested in what your friends come up with. I found this link, but the ranges are so broad, it's only somewhat helpful: http://www.vce.com/music_license2.h tml (If leaving links is prohibited, just delete it--no prob. )
I'm gonna jump in here :) I've been working in publishing and licensing for a couple years now. I've spent a ton of time just trying to figure out answers to the same questions you are asking. One thing I did just to get an idea of a ball park figure is to go onto publishing websites and various sites that license music and look at it as if I was the person needing the music. You can (on a lot of them) set up a "cart" and enter in all the information about what the song would be used for -local, national, radio, tv web etc. and then it will pop up with a price for synch licensing. I did this with a few different sites just to get an idea and to make sure I wasn't going way under price or way over. Anyways thanks for letting me ramble! :)
Hi Don, >where can I find) an industry standard fee chart/guideline with price ranges for selling/licensing song material to different media outlets? < I ran into the same problem earlier this year! I didn't know what to charge a customer for a Public Service Announcement to run regionally. So I did a lot of research into prices for licensing to many different opportunities and compiled the results into a guide called "The Independent Artists Guide To Pricing Music" (I'm a published author in "Recording Magazine" and others...). Check out the guide here: http://tinyurl.com/yfn64xw The guides FAQ page is here: http://tinyurl.com/38r5rh9 Hope it will help! Michael Nickolas, Studio Nine Productions.
Thanks, Michael. Have you considered giving Broadjam members a nice discount?
Don, I have exchanged several emails with Michael over the years and a conversation or two. I have not read this yet, but I can attest to his knowledge and passion for the space. He has given us some good feedback over the years and I look forward to reading his book.....Best of luck. Roy
I smell a conspiracy LOL. I still want my discount! (American can be so pushy). p.s. Thanks, Roy, for the endorsement.
Since we're talking about books.....Here are some other thoughts as well. Succeeding in Music by John Stiernberg, Makin' Stuff Up by Rand Bishop and Hit Men by Fredric Dannen are all good books that I would recommend.....Also, the Complete Home Music Recording Starter Kit by Buster Fayte is a good book on getting the most out of your home studio.....Hope this helps, Roy
Michael Nickolas sent over his guide for us to peruse this morning. If a contract should come your way, this guide is a must. It is simple, easy to understand and will help you get the most for your music. Clearly he spent a lot of time researching this and as he suggests, this should only be a reference point. With that said, you will know if the offer is in the ballpark after reading this......Roy
Let's see. Two more license opportunities or this guide. Hmmm. Life is full of tough decisions.
Hi Roy, thanks for the kind words and positive review of the guide!! It was nice of you to take the time to post. - Michael Nickolas
Thanks for your review of Flags Over Georgia. It seemed fair enough to me.
I agree. It wasn't trance, so I changed catagories. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi, hope you make me a connection, if you get time please check out my new website www.strproductions.org.uk. all my work is on there. please send me a email if you want anything done, so far i have worked with over 80 broadjam members, thanks dave-str
Thanks, Dave. I assume you only invite the best lol or those who need it the worst lol. Consider yourself now connected.
hi don, nice to be connected to you dave
What's the best mix for broadjam stuff? A good headphone mix, small speaker, computer speakers? I use as little effects as possible--my mix sounds right to my ears on my end, but coming back via the internet through broadjam things sound no so rich. I'm trying to figure out if its my mix, my speakers, or the 192kps mp3 format.
I guess I should have started that question off with 'Hey, Roy.' lol
Hi Don, Enjoyed Navajo Nation. Could definitely envision that in a movie. Take care!
But will THEY (lol). Thanks, Juni!
I was also wondering why the licensing opportunity for the add that prefers a "ukulele" dosn't have a review button.
Don, I am out of the office and don't have access to the admin right now. I have sent a note to our licensing manager and will ask him to respond..........Best, Roy
Hey Don - my name is Jesse Spohn and I'm the Music Placement Supervisor here at Broadjam. Just wanted to chime in and answer your question. The reason you don't see a review button is because that opportunity is not using the peer review process. Occasionally a provider will ask to not use the peer reviews - usually on the quick requests where they don't have enough time to wait for the peer reviews to come in. All the best, Jesse
Thanks, Jesse! You guys are on top of it.
Roy, I literally threw a piece together to meet today's deadline for a licensing opportunity. Tempos are are all over the place--and I'd like to re-record first thing next week. Is that possible, or would deleting the original song pull my entry from that licensing opportunity?
Don, Generally, we don't do this as most of the deadlines for television are firm. If it's a film or ad agency, they are a little more flexible. Go ahead and re-record the piece and I'll check on it. If the supervisor is flexible, then we'll get you in......Regards, Roy
You're awesome! Thanks.
Hey Don, if you can send me an email at customerservice@broadjam.com and let me know which opportunity it was I can check in right away. Thanks, Jesse
Jesse, I just saw this! It was so bad I just locked it. Live and learn. I'll get around to redoing it sooner or later. Thanks!
The review is correct and honest.New at this and can only get better!---Jim
Thanks, Jim! I am just learning the culture here, too. But, I will always try to be constructive yet candid--there's an art to that we're all learning. Keep up the good work.
Love your attitude and sense of humor, J E!
