Hailing from Long Island, New York , Keith Burgess has always had an interest in music, whether it was playing records on his father's record player or playing tunes from the radio on his guitar. At the age of 10, he received formal training on the acoustic guitar and later the bass guitar, drums and keyboard. This musical training will serve as a basis for his melodic sound and intricate song structure he is most known for.
At a early age, Keith developed an interest in the musical recording process. His very first recording experience was in 1986, working with the late Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC. Jay served as a mentor, training him in all areas of the recording process. While experimenting with a small four track recorder, a Roland Drum Machine and a Casio SK-I keyboard,
Keith, along with childhood friend, George DeLaPaz, Jr., formed a company called "Sounds of Suburbia Productions" in 1991. DeLaPaz, aka "Audio Major Chip C", was DJ/Producer for the defunct rap group, Serious Lee Fine, produced by the late Jam Master Jay. They produced and recorded various artists and went on to local notoriety. Keith and "Chip" continued to produce music for demos and showcases for local talent, when a copy of his tracks from a local rapper opened the door for collaboration with one of the greatest producers and DJ's in Hip-Hop; Marley Marl. As as result of the meeting, he was offered small recording deals but failed to sign due to contractual disputes. After a short hiatus and a changing music industry, SOS was short lived. The company disbanded and both relocated.
In 1998, Keith (under the production moniker "NiCkLpLaYeDiT!")
made a respectable name for himself, producing demos for local rappers, emcees and singing groups. Inspired by the sounds of Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones, He wanted to take a little bit of each of his predecessors and create a timeless sound to stand out among his mentors ,who heavily influenced him.
Keith returned with a vengeance. Mastering the 24 track recording process, he was giving the opportunity to collaborate with yet another staple in the hip hop community, The RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, Chuck D of Public Enemy, and hosts of other independent and major artists. Venturing into the realms of independent music, He produced and recorded a string of rap singles. One of his works sold an impressive 11,000 copies independently via Nielsen Soundscan and charted at # 38 on the Billboard Rap Charts in 2000.
Keith has achieved yet another personal best, by winning a beat battle competition over the defending 2- time beat battle champion in his first and only attempt. In early 2003, Keith has created a catalogue of diverse material, in all facets of music, to showcase the production talents of NiCkLpLaYeDiT!Muzik Publishing,Inc.
