He grew up playing blues and rock guitar. Those influences are clearly evident in the guitar-based alt-country songs that he produces today.

Many of Westfall's songs are "story songs" in the Texas folk tradition. His cast of characters range from city-bound yuppies longing for escape to train-hopping serial killers, lonely truck drivers and cowboys who have lost their way. Many of these songs are set against the backdrop of his hard-edged guitar work.
Westfall currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas.
