Story Behind The Song
I spent a year on the road with Tanya Tucker's Band. We were playing music at fairs, honky tonks, and in theaters across the country, and I wrote this song for the musicians I was traveling with and the people who loved to hear the music.
Song Description
The song is really about the musicians, who play while the cowboys are dancing with their sweethearts

Lyrics
Dust clouds on the dirt road rise behind us
Fence posts and truck farms go by
Up ahead at the county fair dance, cotton skirts and denim pants
Two step to the music provided
And the cowboys and the ranch hands across the county
Saddle up their pickup truck and they ride
They're pulling their hats on tight, pressing their jeans just right
They'll be trying to turn the young girls' heads tonight
Chorus:
While Cowboy Angels play on mandolins and pedal steels
long into the night
They'll be dancing in the moonlight
Calico and petticoats in motion
Justin boots go shuffling by
Young girls right off the farm, with handsome Johnnies on their arms
Step out like new June brides
Chorus:
And the Cowboy Angels, they tip their hats and play their fiddles
long into the night
While they're dancing in the moonlight
Step out to the back roads of this country
Breathe the cool mountain air
Come see the rodeos, the honky tonks and all those shows
on the midways of a thousand county fairs
Chorus:
Hear Cowboy Angels play on mandolins and pedal steels
long into the night
And we'll go dancing in the moonlight
