Seemed Like A Good Idea

Story Behind The Song

No story. I was just thinking one day about how everything we do seems like a good idea at the time and thought I'd write a hopefully amusing song about it in the eyes of a guy who has a lot of bad ideas.

Song Description

Everything we do, whether good or bad, seems like a good idea at the time. Many times it doesn't work out too well, as in the character in this song's case. But we generally don't do things that we think are going to work out badly. Unfortunately, this guy suffers from some bad choices.

Lyrics

Seemed Like A Good Idea

Well, I remember being 12 years old
To dumb to be a-feared
I stole a ride one Summer's night
On Old Man Grey's John Deere
Well, my daddy wasn't happy
And he took me to the shed
But when he asked me, "Why?",I told him
The first thing in my head

Chorus:
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time
But now I see, it's clear to me
I shoulda' changed my mind
Well, your eyesight's 20-20
When you're lookin' back behind
But it seemed like a good idea at the time

Well, I remember being married to
A sweet, young Southern belle
But the grass was always greener and
My vows just went to hell
Well, my wife, she wasn't happy
And before she threw me out
She asked me why I had to cheat
And the words jumped out my mouth

Chorus:
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time
But now I see, it's clear to me
I shoulda' changed my mind
Well, your eyesight's 20-20
When you're lookin' back behind
But it seemed like a good idea at the time

Well, I remember being too damned drunk
In a bar in River Falls
I accidently killed a man
In a brawl I can't recall
Well, the judge, he wasn't happy
And before the gavel fell
He asked me why I hit that man
And as far as I could tell

Chorus:
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time
But now I see, it's clear to me
I shoulda' changed my mind
Well, your eyesight's 20-20
When you're lookin' back behind
But it seemed like a good idea at the time

Well, I remember being buried in
The prison cemet'ry
Nothin' very fancy just
The preacher, and the dirt, and me
Well, the Good Lord wasn't happy and
Before he sent me on my way
He asked me why I did all those things
And all I had to say

Chorus:
Was it seemed like a good idea at the time
But now I see, it's clear to me
I shoulda' changed my mind
Well, your eyesight's 20-20
When you're lookin' back behind
But it seemed like a good idea at the time

Well, they seemed like good ideas
But they weren't such good ideas
Yeah, but they all seemed like a good idea
At the time
