Story Behind The Song
I was playing music one night with a couple of friends. We were taking turns playing and singing. One of my friends said, "don't you know any songs that aren't about misery?" I responded, with "don't take my misery away, it's all I have left." On the way home that night the melody came into my head followed by the words. I wrote this driving down I-40 in the middle of the night, in the dark on the back of an envelope. The first line, "you can take away my woman", my girl friend at the time had just left. "Take away my pride", that was an incident with the ex-wife. "Put me on unemployment", I had just been fired a few weeks before. "Living in a single wide", the envelope I wrote this on was a foreclosure notice from GMAC, so I was trailer park bound. I wrote the whole thing while driving, got home and played it on the guitar and have never changed a word.

Lyrics
YOU CAN TAKE AWAY MY WOMAN
TAKE AWAY MY PRIDE
PUT ME ON UNEMPLOYMENT
LIVING IN A SINGLE WIDE
CHORUS
BUT DON?T TAKE MY MISERY
IT?S MY ONLY FRIEND
IT?LL BE HERE WITH ME
WHEN IT?S NEAR THE END
AND WHEN I?M SAD AND LONELY
AND I?M FEELING BLUE
I?LL HAVE MY MISERY
TO REMIND ME OF YOU
YOU CAN TAKE AWAY MY WHISKEY
TAKE AWAY MY BEER
LEAVE ME ALL ALONE AND SOBER
WISHING THAT YOU WERE HERE
CHORUS
WHEN THEY TAKE AWAY MY BODY
TAKE AWAY MY BONES
AFTER I?M LONG FORGOTTEN
I STILL WON?T BE ALONE
CHORUS
