Outgrown

Story Behind The Song

This was inspired in part by an ex-boyfriend, and also by a relationship of people I know, the way I perceive their relationship, and how I would be feeling if I were that girl. I see a girl who is now a young woman but because she has been with her boyfriend for several years, is being held back. If I were her I would want to get out and see what I was capable of.

Song Description

A song that starts out a little sad, wistful, and discouraged. As the song progresses, it gradually becomes a little more assertive and powerful, with each chorus passing. The chorus is an affirmation for the character, saying that she is tired of not being appreciated and is ready to be alone as a whole person and that she and her boyfriend have grown apart.

Lyrics

You and me used to be
perfect for one another
and now I'm starting to see
cracks in the foundation

I'm here and you're over there
taking for granted I'm still there
when was the last time
you really looked at me?

Now I am grown, and I've done it alone
while you were busy making me cry
I've been building back up
what you've been tearing down
now I'm ready to say goodbye, goodbye

I've outgrown your silly games,
I've outgrown your pet names
I've grown up, I'm not a girl
and I deserve respect
I need love, just like you
and everybody else does too
I won't wait for you to change,
that's the mistake that I have made

I know you're immature,
but I won't let that hold me back
a whole world is waiting for me
and I want to see everything there is too see
I'm not asking for change,
too late, there's nothing left to save
let's move on with our lives
no tears to cry

Every time I've been down,
it took me time, but I've found,
it was always because of you
now it's time that I tried
treating myself right
now it's time to say goodbye, goodbye
