Better Angels Prevail

Story Behind The Song

I had heard president Barrack Obama paraphrasing president Lincoln, this was early in Obama's term; it was the first true summer of economic down turn for the U.S. economy in '09. Lincoln had given a speech asking after the U.S. after the Civil war was over, that the "better Angels" of the nation may prevail. Obama was stating the hard times ahead and hoping the nation's Better Angels would Prevail. I heard this and thought how cool and it wouldn't be good if in a personal relationship that is on the rocks that we ask for Better Angels to Prevail sometimes rather than make rash decisions and give-up. This is why I wrote the song, or rather the angel I wrote it from.

Better Angels Prevail

published by Lakeland Heart Publishing (SOCAN)

Hanging high above the interstate stretched across the morning skyline,
hot colours reminding me of the way you looked last night.
I tell myself start the truck,
hit the road don't even think about love.
Road signs and day dreams they both worn ya push comes to shove,

When we can't please anyone even ourselves, we might throw caution to the wind.
There ain't no easy answers for a restless heart with our best foot forward we pretend

What we got won't fail, how can I leave when I feel like this.
Better angels prevail, after we wrestle old demons that won't rest.
From the back of mind, to the bottom of my heart, if it takes moving heaven and hell
What we got won't fail, better angels prevail.

You can only play the cards your dealt, let the chips fall where they may
If providence allows my friend, oh you got to play to your strengths.
When we can't please anyone even ourselves, we might throw caution to the wind.
There ain't no easy answers for the restless heart with our best foot forward we pretend,
I put my best foot forward and pretend.

What we got, won't fail, how can I leave when I feel like this.
Better angels prevail, after we wrestle old demons that won't rest.
From the back of mind to the bottom of my heart if it takes moving heaven and hell
What we got won't fail, better angels prevail.

(SOLO)

What we got, won't fail, how can I leave when I feel like this.
Better angels prevail, after we wrestle old demons that won't rest.
From the back of mind to the bottom of my heart if it takes moving heaven and hell
What we got won't fail, better angels prevail.
