Story Behind The Song
Sometimes I think about and question the concepts of God, and existence, and all of that stuff. This song was written during one of those times.

Lyrics
On a Country Road
By SD Gross
While riding down some country road, too rocky for a street
I came upon a crimson toad hitchhiking with his feet.
I really would have passed him by but Lord he looked so beat.
I thought it's not just every day by chance a toad you'd meet.
Well where you going I asked him after driving a mile or two.
He said, "I'm not going anywhere but now I'll go with you."
I admit I kinda worried as I wondered what to do.
I even thought of running off but toads they stick like glue,
I asked just what to call him cause it's best to be misled.
"Well others call me Isabel but you can call me Fred."
It was then that I first noticed, a glass eye in his head,
Like some forgotten idol that yesterday was dead.
The road was long, his story strong. He told me what I thought.
To disagree weren't up to me. I couldn't ask why not.
Was hard to breath, I couldn't think. Sometimes you just can't win.
I iced out on the answer and my head went into spin.
I cried "Help me don't just stand there, I heard you're just and kind."
He said, "I help but those who help themselves. For you, I've changed my mind."
I really begged and pleaded but glass eyes must be blind
Cause he just smiled and ran away and left me far behind.
Well by and by I freed myself, got home and went to bed.
I felt disturbed, a bit perturbed, with gremlins in my head.
And though I've cut my story short, there's one thing I ain't said.
If you've got to help yourself, then who in hell needs Fred.
