HE KNEW BUFFALO BILL
an absolutely true story

As the wagon crossed the border into Wyoming
From the back seat of that Chevy a little boys mind was roaming
A family adventure in the mountains of Yellowstone
Would have to wait until we stopped at an old family friend?s home
His place was a little musty, there was a scent of old mothballs
I could hardly wait to leave as my feet creaked on hardwood halls
When I first saw Old Man Hooker, he was pushing 85
His skin was barely wrinkled, his hair was snowy white
?Come here boy? he crackled, in a stern but gentle voice
And the silver dollar he flipped my way gave me no other choice
He spoke of his own boyhood in those western hills
Of buffaloes and Indian wars and a man called Buffalo Bill
Chorus
He knew Buffalo Bill, I could hardly believe my ears
He?d even seen him ride and shoot in his younger years
He?d touched a western hero, it must have been a thrill
And I hung on his every word, cause he knew Buffalo Bill
He said Bill stopped by for coffee with his folks once or twice
He told old western tales and he offered the boy advice
You gotta? shoot straight and stand tall and know when to be still
I?ll never forget Old Hooker?s words, cause they came from Buffalo Bill
He talked til he was weary, and bedtime came too soon
As I lay awake I could almost feel Old Bill in the room
Next morning we left early and I never saw Hooker again
But I kept that old silver dollar and I still remember him
