THE BALLAD OF GRANDMA AND GRANDPA
copyright 1997
WHEN GRANDPA COURTED GRANDMA, LONG AGO. WHENEVER GRAMPS WOULD COME TO CALL, GRANDMA WOULD KNOW. EARLY IN THE MORNING, OR LATE IN THE DAY. HE'D SOUND HIS
HORN A COUPLE BLOCKS AWAY.
AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, THAT WAS THE SOUND IT MADE. AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, THAT WAS THE TUNE IT PLAYED.
THEY COURTED THROUGH THE WINTER, MARRIED IN THE SPRING. AND EVERYONE FROM MILES AROUND CAME TO THEIR WEDDING. AND AS THEY LEFT THE CHAPEL YOU COULD HEAR THEM DRIVE AWAY. THEY?D SOUND THEIR HORN AND THIS IS WHAT IT?D SAY.
I-DO-GA, I-DO-GA, THAT WAS THE VOW THEY MADE. I-DO-GA, I-DO-GA, THAT WAS THE TUNE IT PLAYED.
NOW EVERY TIME THAT GRAMPS CAME HOME HE'D SOUND HIS HORN. HE'D SOUND HIS HORN WHENEVER THERE WAS A GRANDCHILD BORN. GRANDMA MUST HAVE TRAINED HER EARS CAUSE EVEN IN HER LATER YEARS, SHE COULD HERE THAT HORN A MILE AWAY.
AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, THAT WAS THE SOUND IT MADE. AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, THAT WAS THE TUNE IT PLAYED.
FINALLY CAME THE DAY, GRANDPA HAD TO SAY. "THAT CARS WORN OUT, AND I'M TAKING IT FOR TRADE" THE NEW CAR HE BROUGHT HOME WAS TAILFINS AND CHROME, AND IT EVEN HAD A RADIO TO PLAY. GRANDMA KICKED THE TIRES, SHE LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD. SHE SAT BEHIND THE WHEEL AND SAID "OOH THIS SEAT FEELS GOOD" BUT WHEN SHE TRIED THE HORN, THE NOISE IT MADE WAS "BEEP" AND A TEAR ROLLED DOWN GRANDMA'S CHEEK. GRANDPA SAW IT ALL FROM WHERE HE STOOD, AND HE KNEW HE'D HAVE TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT IF HE COULD. BACK TO TOWN HE FLEW, GRANDMA WENT INSIDE, WAS THE ONLY TIME WE EVER KNEW SHE CRIED.
GRANDMA SAT A WORKING IN HER SEWING CHAIR, NEXT TO THE WINDOW. THE LIGHT WAS BETTER THERE. WHEN SUDDENLY HER HAND WENT UP TO HER EAR, AND SHE ANNOUNCED "YOUR GRANDPA GETTING NEAR."
AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, THAT MADE HER EYES SHINE BRIGHT.
AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, YEAH THAT WAS GRAMPS ALL RIGHT.
GRANDMA STEPPED OUTSIDE JUST AS GRAMPS PULLED IN THE DRIVE. SHE STOOD LIKE A STATUE, FROZEN WITH SURPRISE. GRANDPA HE JUST SAT THERE, IN THE BRAND NEW CAR, WITH THAT OLD HORN WIRED TO THE FENDER
AHOOGA, AHOOGAH, THEY MADE THAT OLD HORN SAY. AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, AS THEY DROVE AWAY.
AHOOGAH, AHOOGAH, THAT WAS THE TUNE IT PLAYED.
