Story Behind The Song
All the keys are a crazy Nord Lead sound played on 16th notes to give it that glockenspiel-on-crack 80s feel. Bumblefoot's production changed the sound from obscure Simple Minds/Peter Gabriel to wannabe power ballad wonderhit. His guitar in the 2nd pre-chorus makes me want to bawl. The ending is a little off-center from the rest of the song, as BFoot turned on his boom box, hit record & then cleverly edited to create some pretty accurate sound bytes at the end.
Song Description
One of a few songs about "the ex." We were long broken up at this point - the wounds weren't as fresh anymore, but the scars were still there - and I wrote it hoping people of any age or gender could relate. When one person gives up & the other one (me, in this case) doesn't want to, it makes for some good songwriting. The title is inspired by the 80's film director, whose films I'd hope this song would have showed up in.

Lyrics
JOHN HUGHES
You said that when you love someone, you know
Well now I finally know, but where'd you go?
Was I too blind to ever really see
All the reasons why you're doing this to me?
I could never learn to love you in the dark
You'd feel better if you kept me in the light
Things will never be the same if you surrender now
Remember how I made you feel before you say goodbye
You said you didn't love me anymore
But doesn't "Love Always" mean love always?
Something deep inside you isn't sure
Would you sooner fight for us than run away?
I could never learn to love you in the dark
You'd feel better if you kept me in the light
Things will never be the same if you surrender now
Remember how I made you feel before I say
Be my baby, drive me crazy
Never let me go tonight
Brace yourself & hold on tight
Don't fly away, I'll find a way into your heart
Hold on to me before I fall apart
