If I Only Had Tomorrow

Story Behind The Song

This song was inspired by a solemn thought of what it might be like when my Father, my closest (but least often seen) parent passes away. Then it drifted off to thoughts of what that's often like for many. . . regretting things unsaid, last lessons shared. . . I really wanted to capture what it's like at the moment right before a person passes away; what it's like for the person and someone they left behind. Beyond that, I really hoped to capture the regret that comes with not saying what needed to be said, and doing what needed to be done. I hope that with all that, I've woven a little moral to the story in there too. Enjoy!

Song Description

The song is a conversation between two people. If I have to explain anymore than that, I didn't do my job as a songwriter. I hope it's a song that can have a personal significance for anyone listening to it. What's it about to you?

If I Only Had Tomorrow © 2015 Kepa Freeman

(Verse 1)
I heard your question, hear me first
My words gotta count, cause breathing hurts,
Don't give these things here too much worth,Can't take them when you go...

You asked me if I had regrets,
I wish you knew what I'd say next
I lost my last chance to confess, my last breath stole the show.

(Chorus)
If I only had tomorrow
Oh if only one more day
I'd do things a little different
Do a lot more listening,
Oh the things that I would say
If I only had tomorrow
Oh If only one more day
I'd do things a little different
Do a lot more listening
If I only had tomorrow

(Verse 2)
As your last breath floats through the air,
I've only got the strength to stare,
I heard the doctors, I don't care, just tell me you're not gone.
I asked you if you had regrets,
I'll never know what might come next,
well here's the change that I'd confess, I'd tell you. . . I was wrong.

(Chorus)
If I only had tomorrow
Oh if only one more day
I'd do things a little different
Do a lot more listening,
Oh the things that I would say
If I only had tomorrow
Oh If only one more day
I'd do things a little different
do a lot more listening. . .

(Bridge)
because I can't turn back these stubborn hands of time,
no I can't stop sunset. . . with these tiny hands of mine.

(Verse 3)
You asked me if I had regrets,
If I had more time, I'd answer yes.
I treated my God like a pest, And bowed to what I craved.
So I fear the next thing I might see,
And I've found some new priorities,
As I lay here still and try to reach the rose. . . dead on my grave.

(Chorus)

If I only had tomorrow
Oh if only one more day
I'd do things a little different
Do a lot more listening,
Oh the things that I would say
If I only had tomorrow
Oh If only one more day
I'd do things a little different
do a lot more listening
If I only had tomorrow

(Repeat End of Chorus)
I'd do things a little different
do a lot more listening. . .

(Bridge)
because I can't turn back these stubborn hands of time,
No I can't stop sunset. . . with these tiny hands of mine.
