For You Alone (Another Thousand Years)

Story Behind The Song

Spread out over many years, I have periodically had dreams so vivid and detailed that I feel that I had literally lived a full lifetime in them. Then when, in my dream, I go to bed one night as an old man, I awake in my real bed still in my youth, or more recently my twenties. It is a very disorienting, but fascinating experience. So I based the song on that experience, where the world really does seem to "come and go." And built the story on that about the only constant through the various "dream lives" and real life lived by the subject being the woman he loves, and his devotion to her. I believe that real love is unending, and so used this framework to express that idea in a song.

Song Description

After a series of vivid recurring dreams, the subject becomes confused about the line between reality and dreams. The only thing he IS certain about at that point is his undying, constant devotion to the woman he loves. (A devotion - or love - that transcends dreams, reality, and even death, because he realizes that "he was made for [her] alone.)

Lyrics

For You Alone (Another Thousand Years)

Verse I

Awake...again. No end.
It's just another thousand years.
The world...it filters in.
And the room begins to spin.
Then I started praying,
and you started saying,
"What is this dream we're living in?"

Chorus

Every night...to live, to die.
(...to laugh, to love, and dream, and cry...!)
And time for the saddest eyes to dry.
The world comes and goes.
But one thing that I have come to know,
is: love, I was made for you alone.
(I love you)

Verse II

The day was cold and black
I knew you weren't coming back
It happened each time and left me crying.
Then I started praying,
and you started saying that,
"Darling, you'll never be alone..."

Repeat Chorus

Verse III

Ages go by in the space in my mind,
and I share all the ages with you.
Night after night, and time after time,
there's only one thing that I'm certain is true:
Forever is fine...if I spend it with you.

Repeat Chorus
