Story Behind The Song
Was talking to an art teacher about her lesson plan and suggested that she have the students make cave paintings like they did in Lascaux, France. She didn't like the idea (though teachers since have done it after I shared this story at gigs) but the words spit, sputter, and blow, came out in the conversation.

Lyrics
Candle light
Fills my night
Cave damp air
I strain my sight
I picture all the world
in my mind's eye
Time to create
the sky
I fill my mouth with earth and soul
Spit, Sputter, Blow...
To create for eyes
that which can't be said
To touch a soul
through a soul that's bled
To share a pain, a joy, a love
To share the breath
from the One above
I fill my mouth with earth and soul,
Spit, Sputter, Blow...
Gaze upon this speckled granite
and tell me what you see
Can you perceive yourself
through experiencing me?
I place my hand
upon the wall
To leave my mark
on this hallowed hall
I fill my mouth with earth and soul
Spit, Sputter, Blow...
I fill my mouth with earth and soul
Spit, Sputter, Blow...
