My Truckin' Soul

Story Behind The Song

My Truckin Soul was written as a collaborative effort of Matthew C. Bauder and William Cole Fraley and became the sixth track of their band, "The Idle Persuaders" debut album, "Bel Esprit" which contains songs about loss, love, heartbreak and redemption.

Song Description

Driving but sparse, featuring just a single guitar, bass, train beat and vocals, My Truckin' Soul has a stripped outlaw country vibe. My Truckin' Soul tells the tale of a lonely truck driver driving his 18 wheeler through a pounding rain storm, fearing for his life, ruing past indiscretions while praying to God and hoping he'll live long enough to complete your run and even have a drink or two after.

Lyrics

Dispatch said there's a storm ahead. It's coming down in droves
Got eighteen miles of downhill drivin' and I'm carrying a heavy load.
Been driving in the rain for hours, could use a real cold beer,
But I'm gonna have a shot instead if I ever get outta here.
Been hauling sticks of dynamite through the middle of the night.
Just lit my final cigarette and my truck just caught on fire.
Just lit my final cigarette and my truck just caught on fire.

Now I don't mind the rain sometimes, especially when I'm high,
But Heaven's far away from me. Hell's fallin' from the sky
Like cats and dogs and ping pong balls crashing down on me.
The thunder claps, the lightning strikes and I can hardly see.
This fires getting bigger now and I can't put it out.
I'm slammin' hard down on the brakes but I'm not slowin' down.
I'm slammin' hard down on the brakes but I'm not slowin' down.

Well, Jesus if you're listening, I could use your help right now.
Help me put this fire out and make my truck slow down.
I promise I'll start drinkin' less and quit these cigarettes.
I'll go to church on Sundays and pay off my gambling debts.
I swear I'll be a better man if you hear my prayer today.
I know that we don't talk too much, but please listen to what I say.
I know that we don't talk too much, please listen to what I say... and I say.

Jesus won't you help me make it through.
This fire's getting bigger now and I don't know what to do.
This rig of mine ain't slowin' down and I can't see the road.
Jesus won't you save my truckin' soul,
Oh, Jesus won't you help me make it through
This fire's getting bigger now and I don't know what to do.
This rig of mine ain't slowin' down and I can't see the road.
Jesus won't you save my truckin' soul.
Oh, Jesus won't you save my truckin' soul.
Jesus won't you save my truckin' soul.

I said Jesus, won't you save my truckin' soul?
I said Jesus, won't you save my truckin' soul?
Well, I know that I have sinned,
But I'm always on the road.
