Story Behind The Song
Mike Greenly - whose song, "Our Great Virginia," is the official anthem of the state (as of July 1, 2015) - has collaborated with Paul Guzzone on songwriting. Jake Stigers, a performer/songwriter who collaborated with Mike and Paul on "Single Mom" was, himself, raised by a single mother. This song was inspired by his life.
JAKE sings the separate 1st person version. PAUL sings this version - with re-worked lyrics into 3rd person ... so that ANY singer (male or female) can perform it... not just the 1st person child of a single mom

SINGLE MOM - THIRD PERSON OPTION
(1st person version also available)
by Greenly, Guzzone & Stigers (c) 2011
Verse 1:
Got a woman in his life that just won't quit
Says: "Boy, I'm in it for the long haul
so you better get used to it"
She puts him back on the right track
When he's doin' wrong
When things begin to fall apart,
she helps him to stay strong
Brought him up all by herself
She did her very best
Chorus:
He was raised by a single mom
Give praise to the single mom
She works hard all week long, unselfishly
Gotta root for the single mom
Say a prayer for the single mom
There'll never be a broken branch in her family tree
Because her man was gone
She had to be twice as strong
She's a single mom
Verse 1:
She gave her heart and soul to him from morning til' night
Showed him how to tie his shoes, how to read and write
She could tighten up a screw with just an old butter knife
Fixed the dinner, fixed the table, helped him fix his life
Lord knows she's not perfect
But she did her best
Chorus:
He was raised by a single mom
Give praise to the single mom
She works hard all week long, unselfishly
Gotta root for the single mom
Say a prayer for the single mom
There'll never be a broken branch in her family tree
Because her man was gone
She had to be twice as strong
She's a single mom
Bridge:
She was just a girl with a brand new baby boy
Nobody knew what she'd been through
But folks were quick to judge
In that sleepy little town
Where everybody knew
Everybody knew
He was raised by a single mom
Give praise to the single mom
She works hard all week long, unselfishly
Gotta root for the single mom
Say a prayer for the single mom
There'll never be a broken branch in her family tree
Because her man was gone
She had to be twice as strong
She's a single mom
Yeah, she's a single mom
A single mom
She's a single mom
