I met her down in Reno she was opening for the band
She smiled at me like she knew me and gently shook my hand
Telling me that she had only ever written one sad song
No matter how she tried the words always came out wrong.

She said the melody was strong, soaring like a burning flame
But every time she sang it, it never came out the same
She stepped up to the mike and started with "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain"
Then "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" sang with honest tears and pain

Then she stepped up and whispered this is ones mine I'll take the blame
She sang about what we have and what little we have gained
The simple joys of life and bearing all the pain
About who we once loved, and who now remains

With a melody so blue, she sang like the angels sing
Every word sung was true. I can still hear them ring

And now I reflect on all the hard years gone by
God I wish that I could remember that song.
It hurts every time I try, but the melody remains
With the scars and the pain, while we are hoping to gain some peace.
While we live on with broken hearts.
