Story Behind The Song

in early 2022 veteran south side Chicago musicians John Ludwig, Dennis Jackson and Shawn Mitchell had a meeting to see about forming a band. It would be months before the band would have a name, but on that first night the idea of a song called Gospel Gumbo was birthed. The idea was we're all different, but each one brings something unique to the musical gumbo pot and the result would be sonically delicious. The song gradually evolved over months of rehearsals with different sections taking shape. It was complex and challenging, but persistence paid off for the title cut of Out of the Whirlwind's album. The album was released a mere two days before the Grammy submission deadline, was submitted and accepted, and voted on for the Best Gospel Album category.
