Story Behind The Song
I took the first verse and chorus of the classic song America the Beautiful, words by Kathy Lee Bates and melody by Samuel A. Ward, and added three new verses and two new choruses. I secured what is called a derivative copyright.
This came about because I was asked to sing a patrotic song for the opening of a business conference in Lake Tahoe. I looked for something that would work with a single voice and guitar. America the Beautiful seemed to lend itself to the required minimalist approach. Never having paid much attention to the song beyond the first verse and chorus, when I checked out the other parts of the song they seemed, unlike the first verse and chorus, overtaken by time.
I decided to try writing another verse and about half an hour later I had three verses and 2 choruses. It seemed appropriate to end the song with a reprise of the first chours.
