Lyrics
Is Anyone Home?
©2006 by Jamie Ambrose
I was five years old when my daddy drove us
On a trip that seemed longer than life.
When we arrived, I saw tears in Mother's eyes
But I didn't know how to ask why.
On the front porch she hesitated
At a door that was once her own.
Then she smiled and I heard her saying:
'Hey - is anyone home?'
I was nine years old when my brother woke me
and said, 'This is goodbye for now.'
He packed a suitcase and went on his way
to some far-off college town.
And I cried as I heard him leaving
'Cause leaving felt so wrong.
But round about Thanksgiving I heard:
'Hey - is anyone home?'
'Is anyone home?'
(bridge)
It's the sound of a heart that's falling.
(hey...)
It's the sound of a memory calling.
(hey...)
It's the sound of a lost voice aching.
(hey...)
It's the sound of silence breaking.
(hey...)
Well, now I'm grown with a place of my own
In a city that's worlds away,
Where folks lock their doors behind bolts and bars
Just because they're so afraid.
But at night on the edge of dreaming
My heart walks a love-worn road.
There's the sound of a screen door creaking,
And I hear myself say:
'Hey - is anyone home?'
'Is anyone home?'
