Note Pads

Story Behind The Song

The additional story behind the song is that the policeman who was called to the scene when David was discovered, collected three notes that he had written as part of the requisite police investigation. When I spoke to him, he could not yet release them so he read the notes over the phone, weeping as he did. The next day he called to apologize for being "unprofessional." I told him quite the contrary, I couldn't imagine how he could have done a better job. Later when David's brother Matthew and I went to his home, we found the blank note pads on which the notes had been written. It reminded me of a song my friend Mark Hauptschein had written many years ago called blank note pads. I asked Mark if he would mind if I rewrote the song and changed it's meaning to be about David. He said he would be happy for me to do that. This song is the result.

Song Description

This song is about the loss of David Christensen who ended his own life at the age of 26 after several years of battling with depression. The loss was very sudden and devastating and impossible to put into words. This song is about that.

Lyrics

When I stand on the line
My life it ain't really mine
Here today
but how about tomorrow

Those moments with you
Over years have turned into
A dream I remember
All the way through

I found your note pads
on your desk
I found your pencils
All laying at rest
There are no words
That can even suggest
My thoughts right now
I can't get them down

Just moments ago
Our conversation
ebbed and flowed
Now there is nothing
We are able to say

So what's been said
must suffice
I may repeat myself
once or twice
I just can't listen
to my own advice

I found your note pads
on your desk
I found your pencils
Now forever at rest
There are no words
That can even suggest
My thoughts right now
I can't get them down
