Story Behind The Song
The irony is not lost that the song is likely to appeal to the very people it is critical of. It's almost intended to be used in a cinematic way as background music in a nightclub/party scene.
Song Description
Bouncy fluff on the surface but under closer inspection lies a scathing idictment of the selfish comsumer culture and the self-absorbed "scenester" club kids that perpetuate the behavior of consumerism to stave off disaffected boredom-i.e. "plugging into the Scene Machine"

Lyrics
Scene Machine
last night, singin? where do we go
dressed right and we?re ready to go
lights out and it?s time for the show
bright lights keep the city aglow
preen the sheen today
to see, be seen, today
let?s dance; put our troubles behind
get numb, going out of our minds
pulse speeds on the floor as we grind
cares fade as our bodies entwine
preen the sheen today
to see, be seen, today
We plug into the scene machine
the same routine, of being seen
We plug into the scene machine
the king and queen of being seen - tonight
real life only seen from afar
flies past from the back of a car
top down as we gaze at the stars
downtown pulling up to the bars
