Story Behind The Song
In 1531, an Indian peasant named Juan Diego saw a vision of the Virgin Mary at Mount Tepeyac. After a series of visits to the Bishop, who did not believe the vision, the Virgin told Juan to gather roses and take them to the Bishop. Flowers did not grow in that region, but he found them there. When he brought them to the Bishop, the Bishop knelt in front of him and the image of the Virgin that appeared on Juan Diego's cloak. At one point in the story, too long to share here, Our Lady says to Juan Diego, "Do not be afraid of anything. Am I not here, who is your mother?" That's why the song says, "I am God's and your sweet mother, and forever I'll be here."
On the 12th of December, churches in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, and many churches in the United States, celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe by singing "mananitas" (little morning songs) about how much she is loved.
Song Description
Nuestra Sra. de Guadalupe is the story of the appearance of the Virgin Mary in Mexico in 1531 to an Indian peasant named Juan Diego. The song tells of Our Lady's attempts to get the Bishop to believe Juan had seen her and of her desire that a church be built for her at Mt. Tepeyac.
